There’s been a lot of talk about whether Jared Leto will still be playing the Joker in the DCEU, and it looks like his days playing the role aren’t yet over as there are reports that the Joker and Harley Quinn movie is still happening.
There had been reports that Jared Leto wasn’t going to be playing The Joker anymore in the DCEU after Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of the character in Todd Phillips’ Joker movie.
People loved Joaquin’s version of the character and the film’s been making a lot of money, so it wouldn’t really make much sense for them to go back to Jared’s version of the character.
Jared Leto’s Joker isn’t dead!
That said, new reports courtesy of FandonWire claim otherwise since they’re claiming that Warner Bros. Pictures is still working on the Joker and Harley Quinn movie which will star both Jared Leto and Margot Robbie.
“A source close to FandomWire has informed us of the current mindset of Warner Bros. when it comes to the future DC Films and Jared Leto’s Joker,” writes FandomWire’s Sean Steele.
The article goes on to say mention how important Margot Robbie’s Birds of Prey is for Warner Bros. Pictures moving forward.
The DCEU has been quite successful of late with the slightly more lighthearted movies such as Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Shazam!.
However, their slightly darker movies such as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad also did well at the box office, just not with the critics.
Do you want to see a Joker and Harley Quinn movie in the DCEU?
FandomWire reports that Warner Bros. is looking to move forward with the darker side of the DCEU for as long as people still go out to watch these movies, which means that the Joker and Harley Quinn movie is still in the works at the studio.
If Birds of Prey and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad do well both financially and critically, this will only bolster Warner Bros’ determination to keep the money train rolling with a Joker and Harley Quinn movie.
This means that Jared Leto will get his wish to carry on playing the Joker in the DCEU, despite the character having been brilliantly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix in Joker.
However, Warner Bros. Pictures has already reportedly greenlit a sequel to Joker, which means they’re probably intending to have two arms of DC Comics movies: The DCEU and their ‘Black Label’ movies which will be set apart from the core DC Comics movies.
What does all this mean for Matt Reeves’ The Batman?
Yet, there’s one issue. Where does Matt Reeves’ The Batman fit into all of this? Would he be in the DCEU – which sounds very complicated if you ask me?
Could Matt Reeves’ The Batman be in the same universe as Todd Phillips’ Joker? Perhaps, but that would then make Joaquin Phoenix’s version of the Joker quite a lot older than Batman.
Or, will they be their own standalone movies and not tie in with one another, which could be another way forward.
We’ll just have to wait and see what Warner Bros. Pictures decides to do with these upcoming DC Comics movies.
