Set photos reveal Colin Farrell back as The Penguin in his own HBO Max spin-off series from The Batman. While a lot of us are worried about Warner Bros. Discovery’s cancellation of projects, The Batman spin-off titled The Penguin is pretty much safe and is ongoing filming. The series extends the universe that Matt Reeves has started.

The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader, was a successful hit for Warner Bros. The movie earned $770 million at the box office, even in the middle of a global pandemic. The announcement of a spin-off happened a few months after the release of the film, which will focus on Colin Farrell’s well-received character Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin.

The new series is set one week after the events of The Batman. It is said that the mini-series will feature Cobblepot’s rise to power after the death of Gotham’s crime boss Carmine Falcone.

The images, which are posted on Twitter and compiled by Den of Geek, feature the Penguin himself. The first set of pictures features the Penguin in a purple suit. The Daily Mail even has a video of him walking into the building.

The second set is him wearing suspenders without the purple suit. From photos and the video themselves, one can already see that these are scenes where Cobblepot is gaining a foothold in Gotham’s organised crime syndicate. He appears more polished and somewhat commanding of attention.

Colin Farrell successfully surprised and delighted fans with his brief performance as Cobblepot in The Batman. People even have his scene pointing out to Batman that it isn’t supposed to be “el” rata but “la” rata. He even asked Batman if he was aware of what a rodent with wings is actually called.

The scene clearly showed how much of a neophyte Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, was during that time. And at the time, the future Penguin already had quite an experience in Gotham’s underworld ahead of the budding vigilante.

Another set of images features Cristin Milioti. Fans know her as the ‘mother’ in How I Met Your Mother. She also starred in HBO Max’s Made for Love, which has been cancelled. She now stars in Peacock’s The Resort. In the pictures, she wears a white overcoat.

In The Penguin, Milioti plays Sofia Falcone, the daughter of Carmine Falcone. To refresh the memory, The Batman introduced Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, as the illegitimate daughter of Carmine Falcone. It would be interesting to see if there would be an interaction between Selina Kyle and Sofia Falcone in the series. At the moment, we have not heard if Zoë Kravitz, who played Selina Kyle, will be present for the mini-series. If ever they will address the connection, it could be in just a passing comment or two.

In the comics, Sofia is also known as a serial killer named The Hangman. Since she was introduced in the comic book Batman: The Long Halloween, we wonder if The Batman Part II will be based on it. Matt Reeves has admitted that elements of The Batman were inspired by that book.

Another set of images reveals the Penguin and Sofia together, and one of them shows them dancing together.

The last set of images reveal Penguin’s purple car.

Fans are looking forward to seeing Robert Pattinson’s Batman in the series. Although his presence will not be as often, it is, of course, in a way, required to fortify the connection of the series to the movie.

Many expectations have been set for The Penguin, starring Colin Farrell. He has to carry the series through superbly. If his appearance in the movie is any indication, there is added depth to Penguin for the series. Possibly, it is the reason for the series’ existence altogether.

If one is to compare his portrayal of the Mob Boss to how Danny De Vito played Oswald Cobblepot in the 1992 movie Batman Returns, the only similarity they have would be the name and some parts of their background story.

Just by looking at the photos behind the scenes as well as characters from the series currently in production, fans’ excitement gains momentum as every day is a day closer to its premiere on HBO Max. Hopefully, this series is something that allows Warner Bros Discovery and DC Studios to do right by the pages of the comic books.

At the moment, there is no official release date for the eighth episode mini-series. It is expected to be released sometime at the end of 2023 or early 2024.
