Fantastic Beasts Films Cancelled By Warner Bros

It’s been reported that the Fantastic Beasts films, which were being written by Harry Potter creator JK Rowling, have been cancelled by Warner Bros Discovery. However, it’s also being reported that WBD CEO, David Zaslav wants to make more Harry Potter films with Rowling. So, it seems as though the Harry Potter-adjacent franchise is over, but there are new movies set in the same universe in development.

So, according to Variety, there are no Fantastic Beasts nor Harry Potter movies in ‘active development’ over at Warner Bros Discovery. However, the aritcle states that Zaslav is interested in making more Harry Potter films with JK Rowling. That said, it seems as though he is not interested in making more movies in the recent Fantastic Beasts branch of the Potter universe, otherwise known as the Potterverse.

The article also states that Zaslav is “open to a deal with JK Rowling on more Harry Potter content”. This is interesting, and we’ve been told in the past that Warner Bros. Pictures has been looking at the possibility of making a series set in the Potterverse that would have been made for HBO Max. Well, it seems as though those discussions are ongoing once again. I’m pretty certain that WBD will want to make a Potter series for their own streaming platform and not outsource this one to another network or platform.

That would mean that HBO Max could become the place for people who want to watch Game Of Thrones and Harry Potter content. That’s a pretty big pull and would be very good business in my mind. As for Fantastic Beasts, I have to admit that it is a dead franchise. The movies have been incomprehensible and weren’t doing well at all at the box office. The most recent film in the franchise, The Secrets Of Dumbledore, did not do well with audiences and critics, and I thought it wasn’t very good.

So, what does this all mean? Well, it seems as though there won’t be any more Fantastic Beasts films in the future, which I am fine with. However, we will be getting more Potterverse content, meaning that we’re probably going to get a Harry Potter series and maybe even some new films with some of the original characters returning.

I think that would bring a lot of people back to the cinema to watch a new Harry Potter movie that doesn’t star Eddie Redmayne. This all comes after Redmayne, who plays Newt Scamander in the films, revealed that he didn’t have any answers on the franchise’s future. Here’s what he had to say on the matter:

I don’t. It’s more a question for J. K. Rowling and David Yates and Warners, but I don’t know, I’m afraid. I can’t add to that. I love playing Newt, he’s a sweet man.

I have a feeling that Eddie’s time playing Newt might have come to an end, and after three movies, I think he’ll be fine with that. Wouldn’t you?
