It was revealed last week that Michael B. Jordan was going to be a producer on the upcoming Static Shock movie.
I am so excited to see that Static Shock film because he’s just such an interesting character.
Static Shock, a.k.a. Virgil Hawkins, offers something that the DC Comics movies universe just doesn’t have at the moment.
In the comics, he’s a 14-year-old kid who lives with his older sister Sharon, and his widowed father Robert in Dakota City.
He ends up being convinced into joining a gang and then gets his electrical superpowers after chemical containers explode.
They release a toxic gas that causes mutations among the people in the surrounding area.
This even ends up being referred to as The Big Bang.
After the event, Virgil has a whole bunch of pretty awesome superpowers such as being able to create, generate, absorb, and control electricity and magnetism.
He then decides to become a superhero and calls himself Static.
However, most of the other guys involved in the Big Bang end up using their powers for evil and become supervillains.
These mutated individuals end up becoming known as the Bang babies, and it’s then revealed that their mutations can actually affect and even spread to the people around them.
Caleb McLaughlin is deep in talks to star as Static Shock
Static’s origins story in both the comics and the incredible animated series is brilliant.
It would make for a fantastic first movie in what should become a Static Shock franchise.
Anyway, our sources have told us that one of the names in the mix is Caleb McLaughlin.
You might know him as Lucas Sinclair from Netflix’s hit show, Stranger Things.
Here’s what one of our sources, who agreed to be being directly quoted, had to say to us about Caleb being in talks with Warner Bros. for the role of Virgil in the Static Shock movie:
There are a bunch of actors being considered. But, I can confirm that the one leading the pack is Caleb McLaughlin. He sent in an audition tape for the role and everyone’s talking about it. Very impressive.
My source then added:
Michael [B. Jordan] and Reginald [Hudlin] are apparently very impressed with his audition and they want to take it further.
This news was then confirmed to me by a further two sources who claim that Caleb is the favourite at the moment.
Michael B. Jordan is already producing the Static Shock movie
As for Jordan, he revealed (via The Hollywood Reporter) that he’s really excited to be involved in the project:
“I’m proud to be a part of building a new universe centred around Black superheroes; our community deserves that,” Jordan said in a statement.
“Outlier Society is committed to bringing to life diverse comic book content across all platforms, and we are excited to partner with Reggie and Warner Bros. on this initial step.”
It’s not known whether Jordan will also star in the movie.
However, there are plenty of roles he could play in the movie.
As a Static Shock fan, this is huge news because Jordan only ties himself to movies he really believes in.
He’s made it clear that he only wants to make movies that matter.
His involvement alone has me really looking forward to this picture.
Caleb McLaughlin would be perfect as Static Shock
If they were to cast Caleb in the lead role, then I would be even more excited to see this.
He’s shown in Stranger Things what a talented actor he is.
Caleb McLaughlan’s also been looking at starring in more movies.
2019 saw him play Darius in the Steven Soderberg Netflix movie High Flying Bird.
He was great in that movie, and he’s in Concrete Cowboy starring alongside Idris Elba.
The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 13, 2020.
