Creed 2 Now Has A Director And It’s Not Sylvester Stallone

Steven Caple Jr. will be directing Creed 2 and not Sylvester Stallone and we were first led to believe. There’s also news on who will play Ivan Drago’s son in the movie.

When Creed first came out I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the movie. I’m going to be honest, the Rocky movies were never really my thing, but what Ryan Coogler managed to do with this boxing movie franchise’s reboot was make the whole thing relevant again. The boxing movie formula had become a bit stale and needed an influx of new life. Coogler was that life.

However, he’s now pretty tied up with Black Panther which looks set to be another hit for him, which means that he won’t have the time to helm to the sequel to his Creed movie. For a while, there had been rumours circling the web suggesting that Stallone himself would direct, but this turns out to be no longer the cast since Variety reported today that Steven Caple Jr. will be directing Creed 2.

Caple Jr.’s an up-and-coming director whose previous work mostly consists of short movies, yet he did release his first feature in 2016, The Land, which received positive reviews. MGM and Warner Bros. are certainly placing a lot of trust in this young director. He’ll be working off a script written by Stallone and Cheo Hodari Coker and the movie will be produced by Irwin Winkler, Charles Winkler, William Chartoff, David Winkler, and Kevin King-Templeton. Jordan and Guy Riedel will executive produce.

There are also rumours that Coogler himself will be an executive producer on the project but no deal has been finalised since he’s currently busy wrapping up on Black Panther. Michael B. Jordan who’ll be reprising his role as Adonis Creed took to Twitter to express his excitement to be working with and support for Caple Jr. Check it out below.

“We could not be more fortunate and excited for the collaboration of Steven, Sly, Michael and the producers, to build upon the success of Creed,” said Jonathan Glickman, MGM’s president, motion picture group. “The combination of Steven’s talent and unique vision makes him the perfect director to continue the Rocky franchise’s storied lineage.”

There’s also some news on who will be playing Ivan Drago’s son in the movie. Stallone took to Instagram to announce that it’ll be someone as of yet unknown who’ll get to play the role, but he’s very excited about it. Hopefully, he’ll be absolutely perfect for the role since Dolph Lundgren’s boots are pretty big to fill.
