It’s been revealed that a Blue Beetle DC Comics movie is in the works for Warner Bros. Pictures and it’ll be directed by Angel Manuel Soto. This news was revealed by The Wrap.

I’m going to be honest here, I’m not overly familiar with Blue Beetle, but this is going to be a very important movie for the DC Films movies.  “It is an honour to direct Blue Beetle, the first Latino superhero film for DC,” Soto revealed in a statement to TheWrap.

He continued: “I want to sincerely thank everyone at Warner Bros. and DC for trusting me to bring Jaime Reyes to life. I can’t wait to make history together.” The film is set to begin production later this year, and it’ll be executive produced by Zev Foreman for Warner Bros. Pictures.

So, who is Blue Beetle? The character was created by Charles Wojtkowski for Fox Comics back in 1939 and he was the alter ego of Dan Garrett, a police officer who uses experimental vitamins to develop superpowers. Fox Comics then went out of business in the 1950s, and Charlton Comics got the rights to the Blue Beetle character and reimagined Garrett as an archaeologist who receives his powers from ancient Egyptian technology. Then Charlton Comics went out of business in the early 1980s DC Comics acquired the rights to all their comic book characters.

Blue Beetle was one of those characters and many of these new characters were introduced into the mainstream DC Universe after the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event. The character went through another change in 2006 when Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner introduced the new version of Blue Beetle, Jaime Reyes in the Infinite Crisis crossover event.

They then launched the new Blue Beetle in his own comic book in May 2016. Reyes is a working-class El Paso teenager who’s very much devoted to his family and with no connections to superheroes prior to receiving his powers. How did Reyes get his powers in the comics? He gets them over he discovers the Blue Beetle scarab on the way home from school. He takes it home and that night it came alive and attached itself to Reyes’ spine. This provides him with a suit of extraterrestrial armor which enhances his speed and strength, as well as to create weapons, wings and shields.
