Batgirl Directors Reportedly Directing The Mummy Reboot

It’s being reported that the Batgirl directors, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, have been approached to direct a new reboot of The Mummy, which I think would be a very good choice. This report comes to us via Giant Freakin Robot. Now, I haven’t heard about this myself. However, I do think that Arbi and Fallah are excellent directors, and they won’t struggle to find work, despite their big DC Batgirl movie being cancelled by Warner Bros Discovery.

The Mummy franchise and Universal Pictures’ Monster Universe have been in a pretty bad way for several years now. There was an attempt back in 2017 to bring back The Mummy and kickstart a Monster Universe franchise. However, the Tom Cruise-led movie turned out to be pretty terrible, and it basically killed any hope of us seeing Universal’s Monster Cinematic Universe that they were supposedly planning.

It has been reported that the studio was planning on making a Bride Of Frankenstein movie, another Dracula film, a new The Wolf Man movie, and they wanted all these films to take place in a shared universe – a lot like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I’m going to be honest, I think it was a pretty interesting idea, but the implementation was poor.

They should have first focused on making a good movie – just like Jon Favreau’s first Iron Man movie. That film was excellent and got people excited to see more. 2017’s The Mummy movie starring Tom Cruise was terrible. Before that, Universal Pictures had made another film that would supposedly be part of this shared Monsters universe. That movie was Dracula Untold. It starred Luke Evans as Count Dracula. I didn’t hate it, but it wasn’t very good, and it wasn’t the sort of movie you’d want to build a new cinematic universe from.

So, it seems as though Universal Pictures is taking things back to square one with The Mummy and focusing on making a good movie with Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah in the directors’ chairs. They previously made films such as Bad Boys For Life, and they also helmed some of the episodes of Disney Plus’ Ms. Marvel series. I believe they are exactly the people that Universal needs to reboot The Mummy franchise. Hopefully, they can breathe new life into their plans to build a new cinematic universe.
