Filoni’s forthcoming live-action film will be set during the New Republic era, a timeline located between the original trilogy and the more recent sequel trilogy. During this period, both Han Solo and Leia Organa are alive, making Ehrenreich’s reprisal of his role feasible, especially as Harrison Ford has made clear his intentions of not returning to the franchise.

An Ensemble Cast

The specifics regarding the extent of Ehrenreich’s involvement in the film have yet to be disclosed. However, Filoni and Jon Favreau have hinted that the project will resemble an event film, similar to 2012’s The Avengers. Filoni quipped, “How do I get in this picture?” hinting at a potential clamour of characters joining the fray.

A Melting Pot of Characters

Hints suggest that Filoni’s film could feature characters from current and completed Disney+ series set in the New Republic era, including The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, as well as upcoming shows like Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew. Given Star Wars proclivity for resurrecting characters and the extended lifetimes of certain alien species, audiences could potentially see cameos from Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, the prequel films, or even The Acolyte.

A Crossover of Formats

Filoni, no stranger to the animation-to-live-action transfer as the showrunner for The Clone Wars, has hinted at the possibility of non-canonical characters from other media making appearances. This could include characters from canonical Star Wars comics and novels published post Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm. For instance, the Wookiee Black Krrsantan, who debuted in live-action in The Book of Boba Fett, first emerged in Marvel’s 2015 Darth Vader comic.

Ehrenreich’s inaugural portrayal of a younger Han Solo in 2018 marked the first Star Wars film to flop financially. Despite a production budget nearing $300 million and an undisclosed marketing budget, Solo: A Star Wars Story did not manage to break even. Critics largely panned the story, although the cast escaped major criticism. Notably, Donald Glover’s portrayal of a younger Lando Calrissian received praise.

The return of Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo promises an exciting journey ahead for Star Wars fans. The upcoming film, brimming with a potential ensemble cast and a convergence of characters from diverse Star Wars media, looks set to carve a unique space within the Star Wars franchise. As anticipation builds, audiences eagerly await more news on the return of the galaxy’s favourite rogue.
