According to Variety’s report, executives over at Warner Bros. Pictures are now considering whether they should push Wonder Woman 1984 to the summer of 2021, or keep the film on its December 25th theatrical release and then release it on HBO Max in January 2021.
They were told this information by sources close to the project, and it sounds like they’re looking at a two-pronged release strategy. This would make some sort of sense because they could end up getting some money from ticket sales and hopefully make up the rest through charging people to watch it on HBO Max.
Wonder Woman 1984 could be coming to HBO Max in January 2021
It’s been a really tough time for Hollywood this year. It’s all due to the COVID-19 pandemic which has caused all movies to be pushed into 2021. Wonder Woman 1984 was the last big blockbuster to be holding onto a 2020 release.
The only real big release to hit cinemas since the pandemic started was Warner Bros. Pictures’ Tenet, and it didn’t end up performing all that well at the box office. Studios are now thinking of how they can still make money without cinemas being open.
It looks like streaming might be the future, yet they still can’t make anywhere near the same amounts of money through their streaming platforms than they would if their films were to hit cinemas. It’s just never going to happen since you can pay for a movie once, and then watch it with multiple people in your own home.
