Shinichiro Watanabe, creator of Cowboy Bebop and Space Dandy, has made a Blade Runner 2049 anime short called Blade Runner Black Out 2022, and it’s beautiful. Watch it below.
When Denis Villeneuve announced that the anime legend, Shinichiro Watanabe, would be making an animated short for Blade Runner 2049, people naturally got very excited.
Watanabe is famed for creating Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Space Dandy, three of the most highly acclaimed anime series. If you haven’t watched them, I highly recommend you seek them out if you are at all interested in anime.
Villeneuve has been reaching out to a number of directors, whom he calls his ‘friends’, to make shorts set in the Blade Runner universe. We’ve seen some spectacular work come out of these shorts, however Watanabe’s short, entitled Blade Runner Black Out 2022, is in a league of its own.
His art style and tone matches the Blade Runner universe perfectly. It shares that dream-like quality of the original picture and you can’t help but think that this was a match made in heaven. You can watch the short in all its glory below.
Blade Runner Black Out 2022 is something very special, and hopefully it will become popular enough to spawn a spinoff anime series that Watanabe can helm.
Blade Runner 2049 isn’t out in UK cinemas until October 5th, however critics have already been heaping praise upon Villeneuve’s sequel to Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic. It stars Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, Robin Wright, Dave Bautista, and see Harrison Ford return as Rick Deckard.
