WARNING: THERE ARE MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE MANDALORIAN SEASON 2 EPISODE 5 IN THIS ARTICLE.

So, The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 5 (called Chapter 13: The Jedi) has just been released on Disney Plus and Star Wars fans the world over are losing their respective minds. Why, you ask? Well, there are a myriad of reasons for this, but the main one could be because it teased a pretty epic villain getting his live-action debut.

That villain, just in case you weren’t sure who I was referring to, is Grand Admiral Thrawn. Thrawn is a pretty big deal as far as Star Wars fans are concerned. He was first introduced in 1991’s Timothy Zahn’s Star Wars expanded universe novel, Heir to the Empire. However, when Disney took over Lucasfilm, all those expanded universe comic books and novels were decanonised. That meant that Thrawn was no longer canon.

That said, Lucasfilm has been bringing elements of the expanded universe material into canon and that included Thrawn who was introduced as the main villain in Dave Filoni’s animated Star Wars show, Star Wars: Rebels. He was voiced by Lars Mikkelsen (Mads Mikkelsen’s older brother), and fans just loved the blue baddie. Zahn was then hired to write a new trilogy for Thrawn which just explored his backstory even more and made the character even more popular.

Grand Admiral Thrawn could be coming to an Ahsoka Tano The Mandalorian spinoff series

Thrawn (who’s native name is Mitth’raw’nuruodo), was a grand admiral in the Imperial Navy, and categorically “the most brilliant of the Emperor’s minions”. He’s a member of the alien Chiss species, and is described as being a tall, solidly built humanoid with blue skin and glowing red eyes. He’s pretty imposing and Ahsoka Tano’s had run-ins with him in the past in Star Wars: Rebels.

In the recent episode of The Mandalorian, Ahsoka fights a character called Morgan Elsbeth who’s terrorising a city of people. Eventually, Ahsoka bests Elsbeth and then asks her for information on where her Master is. She then says: “Where is Thrawn”. And this is when Star Wars fans the world over started to get very, very excited. This episode seems to be setting up an Ahsoka Tano spinoff series with Thrawn as its main villain.

If that’s not the case, then The Mandalorian’s future seasons might delve into this storyline further. It could end up becoming a bit like Game of Thrones with many different plotlines going on at once. That said, I would love to see an Ahsoka Tano spinoff show in which she goes in search for Thrawn. Hopefully, it might also tell us what happened to Star Wars: Rebels’ Ezra Bridger. The last time we saw him, he was trapped on a spaceship with Thrawn going into the unexplored regions of the galaxy.
