Scott Pilgrim Anime Series Coming To Netflix With Original Actors Returning

Netflix announced that the original Scott Pilgrim vs the World actors would reprise their roles in an anime series. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World came out back in 2010. The movie had a simple but fun premise. Scott liked a girl named Ramona, and he had to fight all of her ex-boyfriends to be with her. The movie is loaded with visuals and sounds that come from a mix of video games. While the film is not based on a video game, it was obvious that it had a heavy influence on it.

The film itself is considered a flop. It was made with a budget of $85 million but only earned $49 million worldwide. Regardless, it has received praise where it did matter.

Director Kevin Smith (Clerks) has admitted to enjoying the film and has said that Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon A Time In Hollywood) and Jason Reitman (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) did too. The film did get a cult following after its release. In 2014 Den of Geek listed it as the third-best underrated comic book film.

Netflix announced on social media and YouTube channel that they’d be making Scott Pilgrim vs The World anime. It revealed that many, if not all, of the original cast of the 2010 film would be reprising their roles for the anime series for the streaming network.

Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Satya Bhabha, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Brie Larson, Alison Pill, Aubrey Plaza, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, Johnny Simmons, Mark Webber, Mae Whitman and Ellen Wong are all listed in the announcement.

Not only that, but the announcement also included that Bryan Lee O’Malley, Edgar Wright and BenDavid Grabinski will be producing.

O’Malley created the comic book series from 2004 to 2010, which has a total of six volumes. The movie, while simplified, did adapt the entire six volumes. He will be joining Grabinski in writing the series. Grabinski is known for Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and Happily. Both O’Malley and Grabinski will be the showrunners of the anime.

O’Malley and Grabinski said:

We’re getting the band back together! A stellar cast, perfectly assembled by Edgar Wright. And, with Science SARU leading the phenomenal animation, we couldn’t ask for a better team for this adventure. We can’t wait for fans and newcomers alike to see what we and our partners at Science SARU have been cooking up. It’s going to be a wild ride.

Edgar Wright directed and co-wrote the 2010 film. To hear that they also have him on board the project is just incredible. Wright is known for the Cornetto trilogy. This includes Shaun of the Dead (2004), Hot Fuzz (2007) and The World’s End (2013). He also directed the action film Baby Driver (2017) and wrote MCU’s Ant-Man (2015).

Wright followed up by saying:

One of the proudest and most enjoyable achievements of my career was assembling and working with the dynamite cast of Scott Pilgrim. Since the film’s release in 2010, we’ve done Q&As, remembrances, and charity read-throughs, but there was never the occasion to reunite the whole gang on an actual project until now. Original creator Bryan Lee O’Malley, along with writer BenDavid Grabinski, have conjured up an anime series of Scott Pilgrim that doesn’t just expand the universe but also…well, just watch it. I’m more than happy to announce that I have helped coax the entire original cast back to voice their characters on this epic new adventure. You are in for a treat.

The animation will be done by Science SARU. The studio is known for Devilman Crybaby (2018), Star Wars: Visions (2021), The Night Is Short Walk On Girl (2017), Ride Your Wave (2019) and several others.

It’s perfect that a Japanese animation studio will be developing the series since O’Malley was inspired by the manga. Abel Gongora, who has worked for Science SARU since 2007, will be directing the Scott Pilgrim anime series.

Another interesting detail about the series is that Anamanaguchi will be making original songs for the anime with composer Joseph Trapanese. Anamanaguchi did the soundtrack for the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game (2010) which was produced by Ubisoft.

Trapanese has made a lot of music for film, TV and video games. His notable works are Oblivion (2013), The Greatest Showman (2017), Shadow and Bone (2021), Tron: Uprising (2012-2013), Spiderhead (2022) and Need for Speed Payback (2020).

The announcement is exciting news, as I am a fan of the film and the video games. The idea that the comic will be retold in anime is something I do look forward to. And I do presume that the anime will dive into subplots that were in the comic but were not included in the film. I am expecting that they might do something different that’s not in both the comic or the movie.
