RELEASE THE AYER CUT IS BACK…! In the ever-evolving world of social media, where trends come and go faster than a British summer, one hashtag has proven to be as tenacious as a bulldog with a bone. Yes, you’ve guessed it, “#ReleaseTheAyerCut” is once again making the rounds on Twitter, causing a stir among fans and film buffs alike.

This persistent call to action is a testament to the power of fandom and the enduring appeal of David Ayer’s vision for the Suicide Squad. But, why do fans so desperately want Warner Bros. Pictures to “Release The Ayer Cut”? Let’s investigate!

The Ayer Cut, as it’s affectionately known among the fandom, refers to David Ayer’s original version of the 2016 film Suicide Squad. This version, drastically different from the theatrical release, has been the subject of much speculation and anticipation. Now, with the hashtag trending once again, it seems the clamour for the Ayer Cut is reaching fever pitch.

The story of the Ayer Cut is a tale of two films: the one that made it to the theatres and the one that didn’t. The theatrical version of Suicide Squad, released in 2016, underwent significant changes in post-production, resulting in a final product that was markedly different from Ayer’s original vision. This version, much like Joss Whedon’s Justice League, was met with a lukewarm reception at best.

However, the tide turned when Warner Bros. released Zack Snyder’s Justice League cut, a move that was largely driven by fan insistence and the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement. This sparked hope among fans that the Ayer Cut might see the light of day. Now, with the #ReleaseTheAyerCut hashtag trending again, it seems that hope is alive and well.

Adding fuel to the fire, David Ayer did take to Twitter to comment on the differences between his cut and the theatrical release. When asked about the disparities, Ayer responded: “Shockingly different. Apples and oranges.” This statement, coupled with his assertion that no reshoots would be necessary, only some VFX work, has only served to heighten anticipation for the Ayer Cut.

Ayer’s active engagement on social media and his willingness to work on his cut have created an atmosphere of optimism among fans. After all, if they could get Zack Snyder’s Justice League out, why not the Ayer Cut? The dream of seeing the Snyderverse restored and Ben Affleck reprising his role as Batman in Suicide Squad is still very much alive, even though it seems as though it’ll never happen.

It’s going to be interesting to see what happens now that James Gunn is at the head of DC Studios. Will he allow the Ayer Cut to be released on streaming for instance? Maybe, but we really can’t tell you one way or the other.

It’s all very much up in the air right now, and since Gunn is working on building his very own DC Universe and kickstarting it off with Superman: Legacy, which he’s writing and will also direct, I think he might have a bit too much stuff on his plate right now to also worry about the Ayer Cut.

So, what can we expect from the Ayer Cut, should it ever be released? According to Ayer, his version of the film is far removed from the colourful and humorous version that graced our screens. It promises more screen time for certain characters, including a rawer portrayal of the Joker by Jared Leto, and a generally darker tone.

As #ReleaseTheAyerCut trends once again, it’s clear that the fans’ voices are loud and persistent. With Warner Bros. undergoing major internal changes, the hope is that the new management will listen to the fans. The DCEU is at a pivotal moment, and the release of the Ayer Cut could be a game-changer. For now, though, all we can do is wait, watch, and tweet.
