Perfect Dark Remake For Xbox Series X In Development

Perfect Dark Remake For Xbox Series X In Development

The new Perfect Dark game in development for the Xbox Series X (and the Xbox Series S) seems to be a remake instead of a fresh new title. A new Perfect Dark has been in the works for some time now.

This was announced back in 2020 during The Game Awards. It was no secret that this was set to reboot the franchise. The game is being developed by The Initiative which is a relatively new company.

The people behind it have a good high-profile background in making triple-A games like God of War, Uncharted, Tomb Raider and Call of Duty. With Microsoft pushing for more quality games under their Xbox brand, this is something that many gamers are excited about.

Many have been waiting to see Xbox Games reach the same level of quality that Sony has been making for the past few years. While Microsoft has made some that do stand out, it’s few and far between.

When the new game was announced, it was described as “Eco Sci-Fi.” Early trailers also showed a future where the world is experiencing multiple ecological disasters. Large corporations run the world, but things don’t seem to be as well as they appear. This gave fans hope that this could be a completely new game, which obviously got many excited.

ComicBook.com reports that the new Perfect Dark game seems to be a reboot based on some info from a developer involved in the game. ResetEra Forums highlighted Tyler Thornock’s LinkedIn profile which describes himself as a Technical Animator for The Initiative.

Thornock’s profile highlights projects he has worked on and is currently working on. This mentioned Uncharted, The Last of Us, Anthem, Dragon Age 4, Bioshock 4 and Perfect Dark.

Interestingly, Perfect Dark indicates that it’s a remake. Thornock has already updated his profile by removing the word “remake” beside the title. But this does make us wonder if the new game is actually a remake instead of a fresh new game.

Remakes are not bad. They are based on an old title but remade to fit newer graphics, new gameplay mechanics and potentially improved storyline using a new game engine. It is essentially a new game. And remakes have been a success for several titles like the Resident Evil games, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and Dead Space Remake.

I suppose the main disappointment for this is, while it can dive deeper into Joanna Dark’s story, it still means that it is a retelling of the old game. But as I’ve seen with other video game remakes, this is also a good thing, for it can expand the franchise. In addition, it can broaden its reach to generations of gamers.

We have to understand that a remake is not the same as a remaster, which is basically a graphical (and sometimes gameplay) modern upgrade which still uses the original engine it was based on. Metroid Prime Remaster on the Switch, Diablo 2 Resurrected, and Mass Effect Legendary Edition are great examples of that.

We still have to wait for any official announcement regarding the game. For now, Perfect Dark being a remake is, at the moment, a rumour.

Back in September 2021, we did get some exciting news that Crystal Dynamics will be involved in creating the game. It was reported that some developers had left the company because of slow development progress and a lack of creative autonomy.

While it was a surprise that they added another studio to work on the game, it wasn’t a surprise why they chose Crystal Dynamics.

The Initiative is led by Darrell Gallagher, who has worked for Crystal Dynamics for many years. He also has worked on several Microsoft game projects such as Halo 5: Guardians, Gears of War 4 and Forza Horizon 3.

Perfect Dark (2000) which initially was developed by Rare, came out on the Nintendo 64. The game was a spiritual successor to the most popular first-person shooter developed for the system, GoldenEye 007. Perfect Dark was one of the most well-received games on the system by critics and audiences.

Two more games were released after the first game. Perfect Dark for the Game Boy Color which was released in the same year as the N64 game, and Perfect Dark Zero (2005) for the Xbox 360. Both games were also received well by critics.

It’s been 18 years since the last game was released. Fans of the franchise have been waiting for so long. Thus, in case this is a new game or even a reboot, we hope that it does live up to its name.
