The New Mutants trailer has just hit the web and it looks a lot more like a Wes Craven horror flick than an X-Men film, and we love it! Check it out below.
I’m going to be totally honest here; I know very little about X-Men’s New Mutants. I’ve never read the comics, however, after having seen the trailer for the upcoming movie, I’m starting to think that I should pick a few issues up. Josh Boone’s (Stuck In Love and The Fault In Our Stars) new X-Men film seems unlike any other we’ve ever seen from the franchise. 20th Century Fox has already shown their willingness to really push the boundaries of the superhero movie genre with Deadpool and more recently Logan. It looks like their delving into the horror genre with The New Mutants. Check out the trailer below.
The New Mutants is mostly set in a secret testing facility that looks more like a scary abandoned mental asylum, in which five young mutants are being held against their will and experimented on. Illyana Rasputin, a.k.a. Magik (Anya Taylor-Joy), Rahne Sinclair, a.k.a. Wolfsbane (Maisie Williams), Sam Guthrie, a.k.a. Cannonball (Charlie Heaton), Roberto da Costa, a.k.a. Sunspot (Henry Zaga) and Danielle Moonstar, a.k.a. Mirage (Blu Hunt) all band together to trie and escape their spooky prison. The New Mutants also stars Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes, who’s acting as their mentor and is supposed to be the one looking after the inexperienced mutants.
The film has a very impressive young cast and a relatively untested director in Josh Boone whom obviously has a great love of horror. He’s spoken at length of how the films of Wes Craven, in particular, Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warrior, and he told Entertainment Weekly that The New Mutants is a “full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe.”
All of this sounds very exciting and judging by the trailer Fox seem to have created something the likes of which we have never seen from the superhero genre. It’s refreshing to see what the movie studio is doing with their X-Men movies by making them more stripped back and incorporating more adult themes.
