Aquaman 2’s Trailer Confirms Amber Heard’s Return As Mera

DC has released Aquaman 2’s first trailer at the CinemaCon and revealed the return of Amber Heard’s Mera.

Heard has played the role of Mera twice so far, in Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021) and Aquaman (2018). She has always been expected to show up in the sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. But after she lost the defamation case against Johnny Depp, many fans of the DCEU wanted her gone.

Even during her trial with Depp, ex-DC Films president Walter Hamada has pointed out that her role in the upcoming film was reduced because the actress lacked chemistry with the main lead Jason Momoa. At the time, they even considered recasting her.

There was a period when fans wanted Emilia Clarke to be cast as Mera since she and Momoa already had good chemistry, which was seen in HBO’s Game of Thrones. And to this day, they still consider each other as on-screen husband and wife, calling each other “Moon of my life” and “My sun and stars.”

It seems that the hopes of Clarke being cast as Mera has been shut down.

Since CinemaCon is a very closed event and expensive to even enter, we can only rely on the ones who were able to get an entry. Deadline was able to tell details about the trailer, saying:

Lots of fisticuffs with Black Manta, serious speeches by Aquaman — who has a new baby — and the Black Trident enemy how has a lot of power. The trailer begins with Aquaman back near his lighthouse home, contemplating life with Temuera Morrison’s Tom Curry. But there’s still a lot of drama and chaos under the water as Aquaman battles a huge submarine beneath and foes on the beach.

Not only that, but the outlet has also confirmed that Amber Heard can be seen in a battle scene. Deadline didn’t detail much about her scene. But a Twitter post from @meradceu has said:

Mera is in the trailer using her powers and she gets a brand new white suit!

We don’t really have any details on how long her screen time will be in the final film. But having Mera in the film is significant, especially with her and Aquaman having a baby together. It’s going to be difficult not to include the child’s mother.

The movie’s focus is not on Aquaman and Mera, and they obviously didn’t recast Mera. They just decided to keep Heard in it. However, they did opt to focus on the bromance between Momoa and Patrick Wilson. Director James Wan has said:

It’s an action-adventure story with a really fun bromance between Arthur and Orm. Orm was a villain the first time around, but this time Arthur needs him.

The future of Aquaman is still unknown after the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. It’s the final film under the DCEU, and we don’t know if this franchise will crossover to the new DC Universe. While we know that Peacemaker and some parts of Suicide Squad will be kept, many elements of the DCEU have been recast or rebooted, like Superman and Batman.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to release on December 20, 2023, in the US and December 29, 2023, in the UK.
