Minions 2: The Rise Of Gru has ended up topping this week’s box office charts in the UK, which was a bit of a surprise! This weekend saw the relaunch of ‘National Cinema Day’ a nationwide event not seen in the UK since 1996 when tickets were just £1. For the whole of Saturday this weekend they were £3. Elsewhere other countries such as North America offered the same deal with tickets costing just $3 (minus taxes) which saw some whirlwind audiences and box office movement.

In the UK Warner Bros’ DC League of Super Pets ended up coming in second place at the box office over the weekend, and on Saturday took £501k for a total weekend gross of £1,008,586 (via BFI). Minions 2: The Rise Of Gru ended up making a pretty impressive £1,056,163 at the UK box office. The movie has been a pretty big hit the world over for Universal Pictures. It’s now in its tenth week in the UK top 10 box office charts. The movie’s done really well, and I’ll let you into a little secret, it’s my favourite movie of the year. There, I said it. I preferred Minions 2 to The Batman and Top Gun: Maverick. I know, call me crazy, but that’s just how I feel.

BANANA! Minions 2 is still on top of the UK box office!

Top Gun: Maverick returned to third position in its 15th week with £270k alone on Saturday for a weekend finishing on £600K. Elsewhere the re-release of Spider-Man: No Way Home from Sony drew in £342k this weekend, £220k on Saturday as part of the £3 offer. Spider-Man: No Way Home is still making Sony Pictures so much money! It’s honestly crazy how much money that movie has made over the past few months. It’s even crazier considering the movie was never actually released in China!

In the US whilst Top Gun: Maverick and Spider-Man: No Way Home battled valiantly across the weekend, it appears Maverick has pipped ‘old Spider-Man to the post. Once confirmed it’s looking likely Spider-Man will sit on a £4.78m ($5.5m) weekend, with Top Gun just ahead on £5.22m ($6m) as we head into Monday of the Labor Day holiday weekend.

In third place for the weekend in the US, DC League of Super-Pets took £4.74m) $5.45m showing once again the pull for family films, particularly with a discounted price point which saw over 8.1m admissions in the US on Saturday.

It’s been a really good weekend for animated movies, with both Minions 2 and DC League Of Super-Pets performing well. I’m actually really glad to see these two movies perform better after their initial releases. DC League Of Super-Pets really didn’t do all that well. Minions 2 did. It did really well. But, I actually think that was justified, because, as I said before, I think the movie is really good.
