A Marvel Studios boss has addressed the critical reaction to Eternals.
Speaking to Variety, Victoria Alonso was addressing the mixed critical reaction that Marvel’s latest film has received.
The film is the first MCU film to officially be “rotten”, sitting at 47% on Rotten Tomatoes.
“MCU fans will decide” says Alonso
Addressing the critical response, Alonso said:
We have tried to stir it up and sometimes the critics are not with us. That’s OK. That’s OK. We thank you for being a critic. We thank you for writing about us. And the fans will decide.
She went on to make a passionate defense of Marvel’s commitment to the LGBT equality cause:
Diversity and inclusion is not a political game for us. It is 100 percent a responsibility because you don’t get to have the global success that we have given the Walt Disney Company without the support of people around the world of every kind of human there is.
While Eternals hasn’t quite landed with the critics, its audience score currently sits at 80%.
Meanwhile, the film has taken $281.4m at the worldwide box office so far.
The film is a massive step forward for diversity and for championing LGBT equality, and that deserves to be celebrated.
