Liam Neeson’s Ice Road 2 Is Being Made For Amazon

Liam Neeson’s movie Ice Road will be getting a sequel on Amazon Prime Video with Ice Road 2: Road To The Sky.

Netflix bought US distribution rights for Ice Road for $18 million. The Ice Road was released theatrically in several countries, and the film was then released on the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in other territories.

The film didn’t fare well in terms of ratings. It has gotten a Rotten Tomato rating with a 43% score on the Tomatometer, and even the audience score sits at 31%.  Even at Metacritic, it didn’t fare well either, with a score of 42 out of 100 and a user score of 4.7 out of 10.

With streaming services not releasing details on how the film performed, it’s hard to tell how it did. But at the worldwide box office, it did earn 5.5 million. While this might not be much, it’s possible that the film earned enough, thanks to the distribution rights, to warrant a sequel. Currently, the film is also available internationally on Google, HBO, iTunes, Chili and others.

In the initial movie, the plot revolves around a group of truck drivers who embark on a dangerous undertaking across frozen lakes and wintry roads. Their mission is to transport a vital component that holds the key to rescuing workers trapped inside a collapsed diamond mine.

In a report by Deadline, Ice Road 2: Road To The Sky will see the return of Mike McCann, played by Liam Neeson. The actor is also set to produce, and Jonathan Hensleigh is set to return for the sequel. It is also reported that Amazon Prime Video is set to pre-buy international distribution rights, excluding Germany, for $17 million.

In the sequel, McCann is a skilled and courageous ice road driver known for his expertise in handling big-rig trucks. During their expedition on a crowded tour bus, they will navigate the treacherous terrain of the perilous 12,000 ft. Road to the Sky, McCann and his experienced mountain guide find themselves confronted by a band of Nepalese mercenaries. Now, they must not only fight for their own survival but also protect the innocent passengers aboard the bus and safeguard the ancestral homeland of the local villagers from the mercenaries’ grasp.
