Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse Swings To The Top Of The Box Office

The animated sequel to Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse from 2018, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse stormed to dominate at the box office this weekend.

Domestically the film opened 240% up against the previous film dominating with an opening of £97m ($120m) and received the biggest opening date of any movie in the US so far for 2023 (via Box Office Mojo). That includes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 £59.7m ($48.1m) and The Super Mario Bros. Movie £25.5m ($31.7m) for domestic openings.

In Mexico, the film took an estimated £9.34m ($11.6m) on the weekend, and £30.5m ($37.8m) came from European territories. In India, the film grossed £2.25m ($2.8m).

Worldwide the film has continued to deliver. It is one of the few Hollywood releases of late to receive a China release, and it paid off with £13.85m ($17.2m). In the UK, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse led the box office for the final weekend of the half-term holidays across 561 sites taking in almost £6.66m ($8.9m) for its debut.

This was more than double the weekend’s gross for The Little Mermaid, which took £3.34m ($4.15m) and settled for second place and stands on around £12m ($14m) so far. The total gross so far for Across The Spider-Verse stands at £167m ($208m), and the chances of smashing past £402m ($500m), especially if the domestic gross continues to gather pace, are very high.
