Our Flag Means Death Season 2 is happening! The new series was one of the surprise hits of 2022, and it was a massively fun twist on the traditional pirate genre. The series was created by David Jenkins, who was relatively unknown before it came out. However, the show was helped greatly by Taika Waititi jumping on board as executive producer.
The period romantic comedy earned plaudits from critics for its subversions of traditional pirate tropes, along with its representation of LGBTQ+ relationships. Fans of the show will be pleased to know that HBO Max has confirmed that there will be another season that should hit screens next year.

The pirate genre is always one that seems to straddle the gap between mainstream and niche entertainment. The Pirates of the Caribbean films are some of the most successful ever, raking in more than $4.5 billion worldwide. However, it failed to spark an influx of other blockbusters about swashbuckling seafarers. Likewise, a series like Black Sails was met with critical acclaim, but that offering didn’t manage to revitalise the genre on television either.
The gaming industry is the place where pirate themes could be considered most mainstream, and there are always countless games in the genre to choose from on a variety of platforms. One of the best pirate games of all time is Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, which was among the best-selling games of 2013. And who can forget the classic Monkey Island games for PC from LucasArts?
Mobile is probably the best place to find pirate games, and there are options like Plunder Pirates and Pirates Outlaws to choose from. There are loads of mobile slots that use this theme as well, with 1429 Uncharted Seas being one of the most recent titles. This is accompanied by other much-loved slots like Pirate Gold. Pirates work well as a theme for these titles as they love treasure – just like slot players.

There’s no doubt that Our Flag Means Death provides viewers with a brand new way to enjoy the pirate genre, and it offers themes that have never been explored before. This is a comedy at its core, and there’s much less focus on the violence that is usually associated with pirates. It’s helped by its amazing cast that includes Rhys Darby in the main role. He’s accompanied by other excellent comedic actors including Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry and, of course, Waititi as Blackbeard.
Critics were quick to heap praise on the first season of the pirate comedy, and it has a 92 per cent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. After the finale aired, it also became the most in-demand series in the USA. HBO can usually be relied upon to create quality productions, and it hit the bullseye again with this one.
With ten episodes out to date, viewers have already got a good taste of the characters from Our Flag Means Death. However, most of those who watched it were hungry for more. It will be interesting to see where this unique series goes next when it returns for a second season.
