Emilia Clarke Might Play Mera In Future DC Movies

Emilia Clarke could end up playing Mera in the future DC Universe movies. Warner Bros Discovery is rumoured to be considering recasting Mera. It’s being suggested (via Geekosity), that the leadership at WBD might be looking at recasting the DC Comics character for future movies, and they could want the Game Of Thrones actor for the role, which would make sense if you ask me.

This comes after Amber Heard ended up in all sorts of trouble following the defamation case with her ex-husband, Pirates Of The Caribbean star, Johnny Depp. She lost that case, which was unprecedented. People do not tend to win defamation cases in the United States, and since then, Heard’s career has been on something of a downward spiral. There have been multiple reports saying that her screen time in the upcoming Aquaman sequel has been significantly reduced.

Could Warner Bros Discovery be looking to recast Mera with Emilia Clarke?

According to multiple reports, Heard’s character was initially going to have a prominent role in the movie. There was talk of her having Aquaman’s child in the movie, which could still be happening. There were also reports suggesting that her role had been removed from the movie entirely. Now, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Amber Heard is still going to be in the movie. However, it seems like this will be the last time she’ll get to play Mera in the DC Universe. That is a decision that makes so much sense to me.

What Mikey Sutton over at Geekosity points out in their article is that the new leadership at WBD has shown that they are unafraid to take big decisions. They recently cancelled the Batgirl movie, which had already been shot and they had spent $90 million making it. They have also stopped other DC Comics movies from going into production, such as the Zatana and The Wonder Twins movies. They’ve even stopped many of JJ Abrams and Bad Robot’s DC Comics shows from being made for HBO Max. Those shows are now looking for new homes.

Who could play Mera instead of Amber Heard?

Sutton’s logic is that should Mera be in the picture for future DC Comics movies. WBD will decide not to bring Amber Heard back for the role, but rather recast the character, and the most obvious choice for the role would be Emilia Clarke. This all does make sense. However, I do wonder whether they might be better off just forgetting about the character entirely. It’s not like Mera is one of the DC Universe’s main characters. There is so much negative press surrounding Heard at the moment. It’s not been good for the upcoming Aquaman movie.

The movie is being directed by James Wan, who also directed the first film. It will star Jason Momoa, Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Temuera Morrison, and Nicole Kidman. Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom is scheduled to be released on December 25, 2023 both in the United States and in the United Kingdom.
