Last weekend saw the awards season kick-off with 2020’s Golden Globes and it was a big night for Joaquin Phoenix.
The actor wowed people with his performance as Arthur Fleck in Todd Phillips’ Joker, and it looks like he’s all set to sweep up this awards season.
Phoenix has won a Golden Globe before for his performance as Johnny Cash and has been nominated a grand total of six times at the Golden Globes.
He was the front-runner as far as the betting odds were concerned to take the award, but it was still a nice surprise when he was actually awarded with the Golden Globe.
Phoenix went on stage to accept his award for best actor in a drama film and he gave a rather rambly speech which contained a lot of swear words.
In his speech, Phoenix addressed the climate crisis, and he also paid tribute to his fellow nominees. He also included a nice nod to his fianceé Rooney Mara.
Joaquin Phoenix wins big at the Golden Globes
“Contrary to popular belief, I don’t want to rock the boat. But the boat is f—— rocked,” Phoenix said in a statement which was partially redacted by network censors.
He then went to talk about the bush fires currently blazing in Australia and climate change. He called on his Hollywood colleagues and friends to do better.
He then added that they should all take fewer “private jets to Palm Springs”.
Phoenix then congratulated the Hollywood Foreign Press for having made the food served at the awards ceremony all plant-based.
He called it a “bold move”, which might very well be true.
Personally, I’m glad that Pheonix won the Golden Globe. We now have to wait and see whether he’ll also get the Oscar and the BAFTA to make it a hat trick this awards season.
