Henry Cavill has responded to the news that he will no longer be playing Superman in the DC Universe, which is very sad news, but maybe we should have expected it after it was revealed that James Gunn and Peter Safran had come in to lead DC Studios. Cavill took to Instagram to open up about the news that he isn’t going to be DC’s Superman.

There had been reports that Cavill would be returning as Superman in the upcoming movies. This came after Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam movie was released. That movie featured a cameo from Cavill as the Man of Steel in the movie’s post-credits scene.

Cavill then took to Instagram at the time to reveal that he would be coming back as Supes in upcoming DC projects, and he was very excited for us to see what’s to come. Well, we’re not going to see that anymore, which is sad. But, it’s the end of an era, and I think we should be looking forward to what’s coming next.

Here’s what Cavill had to say about no longer being DC’s Superman:

I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.

Who could play Superman moving forward?

Cavill did make it clear that fans “can mourn for a bit”. He also reiterated that “Superman is still around” and that he supports everything that the hero stands for moving forward. Here’s what Cavill said on the matter:

For those who have been by my side through the years…..we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember…. Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.

The news that Cavill will not be playing Superman moving forward came as a shock to fans and also other actors in Hollywood. A number of DC actors, including the likes of Zachary Levi and Jason Momoa voiced their support for Cavill in comments on the Instagram post.

Now, people will be wondering who’s going to get to play Superman next? James Gunn already revealed that he’s writing a new Superman movie with a younger version of the character. We still don’t know who’ll be directing the movie. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with this film. Gunn made it clear that the movie will not be an origins movie. That’s good news! He also revealed that it’s going to focus on Clark Kent and his work as a reporter for The Daily Planet in Metropolis.
