Mark Hamill Talks About Star Wars: The Last Jedi Deleted Scenes Including Luke Skywalker’s Reaction To Han Solo’s Death

Mark Hamill’s been at it again, this time he discussed the deleted scenes from Star Wars: The Last Jedi: one which includes Luke Skywalker’s reaction to learning about Han Solo’s death.

Mark Hamill does love to talk about Star Wars, sometimes a bit too much. He did get into a spot of bother when many critics of Star Wars: The Last Jedi took his comments about the film to be negative and used them almost as evidence that Rian Johnson’s movie is terrible. Just because a film is divisive doesn’t make it bad. I like the fact that The Last Jedi has been so divisive. I’d much rather watch a divisive and ambitious Star Wars movie as opposed to the rubbish prequel movies we were ‘gifted’ with.

Anyway, Hamill was talking to IGN recently, and they started to discuss The Last Jedi’s deleted scenes, of which there are many. Hamill spoke of a scene in which we see Luke Skywalker react to learn of Han Solo’s death, and the other involves his third lesson to Rey which was mysteriously missing from the final cut of the movie. It turns out that the third lesson was about a Jedi’s need to restrain from blindingly going into battle.

Here’s what Mark said when IGN asked him if he regretted that Luke’s reaction to Han’s death was cut from the final film:

“Yes, of course, because it shows Luke was putting on a facade in front of Rey and even Chewie, that he was embittered and sort of a broken man. And I think the fact that he could let his emotions out when he was by himself would have made an impact on the audience because it allowed them to grieve the loss of Han Solo just the way Luke felt it.”

“But that always happens in films. You say, ‘Oh, what about this scene where this happens or that happens?’ because you want to give the fullest experience that you can. And like you say, it was brief enough that I was — [chuckles] They had time for me to milk that big alien but to show any human emotion? Nah, we don’t have time for that. But again it’s not my call.”

They then went on to discuss what has been called The Caretaker Village Sequence, which is another deleted scene, this time involving the third of Luke’s ‘How To Become A Jedi In 5 Minutes’ lessons. Here’s what Mark had to say about that scene:

“Well, it’s interesting because that’s one of the lessons. I think they mentioned there were three lessons and people were keeping count. ‘Wait a minute! We’re missing a lesson,'” Hamill explained.

“I think Rian has lots of thought-provoking ideas in the film. It seems callous for (Luke) to just ignore it and not — the old Luke would be just like Rey. He’d be lightsaber-blazing. I liked it because it shows his kind of mean streak sense of humour, when she comes back and says, ‘Why did you just let me go off like that without telling me?’ And I laugh. ‘You ran so fast!’ Because, again, it shows another side of him. Because he’s pretty serious and dour so it shows that even though he has a mean streak he still has a sense of humour.”
