Melissa Benoist Joins Masters Of The Universe Series

Melissa Benoist Joins Netflix’s Masters Of The Universe Revolution

Supergirl Melissa Benoist is now taking over the role of Teela in the upcoming animated show Masters Of The Universe Revolution. Revolution is the sequel to the Masters Of The Universe: Revelation where it was Buffy the Vampire Slayer Sarah Michelle-Gellar gave the voice to the character.

No information is available as to the reason for the change, but fans are welcoming Benoist’s entry to the show after her highly notable performance as Supergirl.

Showrunner, executive producer and director Kevin Smith managed to bring a spiritual continuation to the 1980s series despite declaring he isn’t a fan himself. His intention was to tie up loose ends of the original series while enabling new viewers to jump into the lore.

Meanwhile, Rotten Tomatoes displays Masters Of The Universe Revelation with a 93% rating but at the same time show only 38% Average on Audience Score. This brings forward mixed reception to the series. However, Netflix still gave the green light for the succeeding season, with some fans hopefully anticipating its return.

Benoist took to her Instagram to share the exciting news, stating:

😲😲😲 very very excitedddd to join the Revolution family as Teela! ……if you need me I’ll be playing with my son’s castle grayskull……

Some sites have pointed out that the actress is actually married to the one who gives voice to Prince Adam and He-Man, Chris Wood. Considering the MOTU Revelation showed a romantic angle between Teela and Adam upon the conclusion, it may actually help that they are married in real life for the characters’ chemistry in the succeeding season.

In an article from The Wrap, Benoist said:

I jumped at the opportunity to work alongside my friend, Kevin Smith and join the ‘Revolution’ family as another bold and fearless heroine. I look forward to sharing the next evolution of Teela’s story with fans.

Teela is central to the story of the predecessor series. After Skeletor, who is voiced by Jedi Master Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill, attacked Castle Grayskull, he led himself to his own destruction. At the same time, his actions ended the existence of He-Man rendering the source of all magic in Eternia devastated.

Feeling betrayed, Teela moved to relieve herself of her duties from the Royal Family of Eternia. However, eventually, she found herself into the task of reviving magic to save their world from ultimate destruction. She embarked on the quest to find and restore the Sword of Power.

During her quest, she was able to bring Prince Adam back and eventually He-Man into the realm of the living. The season ended with Skeletor being presented another chance to stand against Castle Grayskull but with a price.

By that time, Teela has become the new Sorceress of the Castle Grayskull with Prince Adam still as its Champion, He-Man.

It was not a surprise to learn that Benoist is on her path to another heroic character. Many fans loved her as Kara Zor-El aka Kara Danvers aka Supergirl for years on the live-action television series.

Senior VP and general manager from Mattel Television, Fred Soulie talked about Benoist coming into the project. He said:

On the heels of our 40th anniversary, He-Man is more prevalent in pop culture than ever before, which is why we’re especially excited to bring the force that is Melissa Benoist into the fold. Melissa already exemplifies every aspect of Teela’s formidable personality, and we know that she will continue to showcase the same heart as she did in ‘Supergirl,’ providing audiences with a new iteration of a classic character synonymous with strength and heroism.

It would be an exciting transition for her to get into the animated series projects. The show’s official logline reads:

‘Revolution’ is an all-new story that focuses on the classic He-Man vs. Skeletor rivalry in a way audiences have never seen before. It’s technology up against magic as He-Man and the heroic warriors face the forces of Skeletor and a deadly threat to the Planet in the next epic chapter in the battle for Eternia.

With Benoist commenting in her Instagram post about her son’s toys, we do wonder what it would be like to have a mom who is both Supergirl and Teela. MOTU Revolution is still in development without a specific premiere date yet from Netflix.
