Ty Simpkins, the young whizzkid from Iron Man 3, will be returning as Harley Keener in Avengers 4, which has led me to wonder whether he could end up becoming Iron Man in the MCU.
Ty Simpkins’ last (and first) appearance in the MCU as Harley Keener was in Iron Man 3 (directed by Shane Black who’s currently working on The Predator) and he made a real impression both on me and on Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark. His character is very bright (he’s able to help fix Stark’s Iron Man suit), has a difficult family life, wants to help save people, and loves Iron Man. He’s perfect superhero material. However, Harley’s been absent from the MCU ever since Iron Man 3, yet thanks to IMDB we know now that Ty Simpkins has been cast in Avengers 4, which the Russo Brothers are now hard at work directing.
This news led me to wonder whether his character could take up the mantle of Iron Man once Robert Downey Jr. does decide to call it a day on his long and illustrious MCU career. There will be a point where Tony Stark has to either say goodbye to the suit or die (my guess in on the latter), and who better to become the next Iron Man than Harley Keener who certainly shares Stark’s smarts?

It would also make sense that the next Iron Man should be someone who had a direct impact on Tony’s life. He would want to make sure that Iron Man lives beyond him and he would have ideas in place regarding who should don the suit next. Now that Tom Holland has won over fans with his portrayal of Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and I assume the wall-crawler will eventually solidify his membership as part of the Avengers, it would nice to see Holland and Ty Simpkins get to share some screen time together and represent the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, along with Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther and whoever they decide will become the next Captain America.
One thing’s for sure, these actors can’t play Marvel’s superheroes forever. There’s going to come a time when they’re going to have to be recast, and I’m sure that Kevin Feige and co. have been planning this transition for a while, which is another reason why I think having Harley become the next Iron Man would make sense. It would have all been planned years in advance and okayed with everyone beforehand, including Robert Downey Jr. We already know that he had a big part to play in casting Tom Holland as Spider-Man. It wouldn’t surprise me if he also had a hand in Ty’s casting.

What I envisage happening in Avengers 4 is Tony Stark’s death at the hands of a formidable foe, which then sets into motion a protocol he had planned if such an event were to occur where the role of Iron Man get passed down to Harley. We would then have to see him become familiar with the suit and get to do his own little tweaks to Stark’s invention (perhaps something akin to his potato gun from Iron Man 3).
