Warner Bros. Pictures has released a new still image from Zack Snyder’s upcoming film, Justice League, which features Batman, Wonder Woman and The Flash, but it’s got me wondering whether this will be the movie to really get DC’s cinematic universe back on track.
Before I start talking about Justice League, the first thing I’m going to say is that I absolutely love DC Comics. When it comes to the comic books, I actually think that they are doing a far better job than Marvel. The same can’t be said about the movies however. I do understand if you enjoyed certain aspects of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, there was some very good stuff in there, namely Ben Affleck’s Batman and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman.
Suicide Squad however, was a hot mess of a movie. I know that many people enjoyed the film, but all I can say is that I found it old-fashioned, uninteresting and ultimately very dull. However, now that Geoff Johns, who used to be President and CCO of DC Comics, has been promoted to President of DC Entertainment, I can see light at the end of the tunnel. Could Justice League be that light? I certainly hope so.

A while back journalists were invited to the set of Justice League in the UK to see what was going on behind the scenes, and all the reports to come out of it were very positive. These reports have to be taken with a slight pinch of salt, however, this was then followed up by Justice League’s Comic Con trailer, which I personally found to be very impressive. I enjoyed it’s more upbeat tone, and I really hope that they didn’t just chuck all the jokes into one three minute long trailer.
One of the big problems with Zack Snyder’s movies is that they lack levity, which Marvel’s movies have in spades. They’re very serious, which is fine if you’re Christopher Nolan, but DC has to move on from the Dark Knight era. Adding Ezra Miller’s Flash into the mix will certainly help bring a little more humour to the Justice League party.
Stop right there. I’m in.
That said, I do love Ben Affleck’s moody portaryal of Batman, because that’s exactly what he is: a bit of a moody git. Superman’s meant to be the hopeful one and Batman just sees the dark side of everything, hence his penchant for dressing up a bat. Wonder Woman serves as a kind of go-between. She’s the one who talks sense into the two of them.
Then we have The Flash, who’s often depicted as a bit of a joker, but an incredibly intelligent one. It seems as if Zack Snyder and Geoff Johns have decided to bill him almost as the DC cinematic universe’s answer to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, just look at how people reacted to him in Civil War and you’ll understand why they are doing this.
What I do is not up to you.
I personally think this is a very good idea, and could result in Justice League being one of DC’s best films to date, certainly in the last few years. Before that however, we’re going to be seeing Wonder Woman, which I really cannot wait for. This is the first DC movie which Johns will be heavily involved in since becoming President of DC Entertainment, and he also helped write the script. It really needs to be good if DC is to remain relevant in Hollywood, otherwise they’re in danger of becoming completely overshadowed by Marvel Studios. Let’s hope that does not happen because we all want good movies from both Marvel and DC.
Wonder Woman will be in cinemas in the UK on June 2nd, 2017, followed by Justice League on November 17th, 2017.
