Warner Bros. Is Looking to Lure Leonardo DiCaprio to The Joker Spinoff Movie

Warner Bros. is reportedly looking at getting Leonardo DiCaprio to sign onto the Martin Scorsese produced Joker standalone movie.

A few days ago it was revealed, to everybody’s surprise, that DC and Warner Bros. are working on a Joker origins standalone movie which would be set apart from the DCEU and would recast the Joker, much to Jared Leto’s chagrin. This film is said to be directed by The Hangover’s Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese of all people will produce.

In yet another unprecedented movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. is now looking to get Leonardo DiCaprio to sign onto the project. It still remains unclear as to whether they want him to star as the film’s new iteration of the Joker, however it seems unlikely as previous reports suggested that they were looking for a younger actor for the role and DiCaprio is older than Jared Leto. If the actor were to sign onto the project, it would most likely be to play another part. Maybe his character could have something to do with the Red Hood, or be a Detective in the GCPD.

DiCaprio and Scorsese have worked together on multiple projects: Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island and The Wolf of Wall Street. Warner Bros. is hoping that having the legendary filmmaker on-board might help to convince the Oscar winning actor to sign onto the project. This is all part of the studio’s move to bring their comic book movie offerings back to the high, awards-worthy standards of Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.

After Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad received lukewarm reviews from both critics and fans, Warner Bros. and DC are naturally looking for a way to win back trust. These new movies, based on DC Comics properties yet set apart from the DCEU, will be their attempt at doing exactly that.

This Joker standalone movie will reportedly will take place in Gotham in the 1980s and will be a gritty crime thriller featuring the Joker’s origins story. However, with their being so many varying accounts of how the iconic villain came to be, nailing down which one they’ll decide to depict on-screen is a tricky thing to do. The likelihood is that they’ll decide to tell their own story, yet perhaps borrow certain aspects from the comics.

Do you think Leonardo DiCaprio will agree to star in this Joker origins movie? If so, who should he play? Let us know in the comments below.
