Warner Bros. Is Pushing Wonder Woman For Oscar Nominations

Warner Bros. is reportedly gearing up for a big Wonder Woman Oscars campaign. They’re going for Best Picture and Best Director!

Wonder Woman’s been a huge hit for Warner Bros. both critically and commercially. It recently surpassed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to become the highest grossing movie at the US box office, and currently has a 92% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. We gave it an 8 out of 10, which makes it an A-OK movie according to our ratings system (that’s very good by the way). Yet, Wonder Woman is more than that, Patty Jenkins’ movie has brought the DCEU back on course after a succession of below-par offerings (Suicide Squad is a genuinely terrible movie).

According to Variety, Warner Bros. is now seriously contemplating starting a big Oscars campaign for Wonder Woman, and they’re targeting the two biggest categories: Best Picture and Best Director for Patty Jenkins. This would make it the first comic book movie to be nominated in those categories, which would be a huge win for DC and Warner Bros. since it’s something that Marvel hasn’t managed to do (it would give them bragging rights over Marvel).

Wonder Woman is ready to kick the Academy's butt!

Wonder Woman is ready to kick the Academy’s butt!

Before Wonder Woman hit our screens there were a few voices claiming that a female-led superhero movie with a relatively untested lead actress in Gal Gadot and a female director at the helm in Patty Jenkins would result in a flop. Thankfully, the movie proved those naysayers wrong. Wonder Woman was an exhilarating, compelling and thought-provoking piece of cinema, which should be applauded for not toeing the DCEU line. It offered something genuinely different within this Snyder-led universe and was a breath of fresh air.

Now that the Academy can include up to ten nominations in its Best Picture category, I see no reason for them not to include Wonder Woman. Granted, 2017 has been an incredible strong year in terms of blockbuster releases. We’ve has films like Dunkirk, War for the Planet of the Apes, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Logan and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which all deserve accolades come awards season, but with Warner Bros.’ weight behind it, Wonder Woman might stand more of a chance of being nominated over some of those films listed above.

Whatever happens, Patty Jenkins should be proud of what she’s achieved with Wonder Woman, Oscar nominations or not. She made a brilliant movie which has been incredibly successful and critically well-received.
