Venom Director Reveals He Was ‘Surprised’ By The Film’s Bad Reviews

2018 gave us Venom and people were a bit puzzled by it. It had a pretty decent central performance from Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom, but the film itself was a bit of a mess.

The film was directed by Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer and I was really expecting to be better than it ended up being.

I wasn’t the only person who felt that Venom was a mess. Plenty of critics also didn’t much care for it.

However, Ruben was really puzzled and slightly upset by the critics’ reaction to his movie.

He recently opened up about the film’s critical response and his reaction to it.

“If anything, I would have changed the critics’ reaction to it,” he told Fandom during a recent interview in which they were supposed to be discussing his new film, Zombieland: Double Tap.

“I was really bummed that people didn’t like it because it’s a crowd-pleasing movie and I’m not sure if there was just blowback against Sony or people just worship Marvel.

“But I was really surprised that the critics [were gunning for it] because audiences really enjoyed the movie.

“And so many people who’ve seen it just appreciated that it was a fun superhero movie. So I was a little surprised. I don’t know what they were expecting.”

The director also expressed his relief that Andy Serkis was taking over the reins for the sequel.

“I was kinda happy to let somebody else take over. And I’m excited to see what he does with it,” he said.

He also hinted that Tom Hardy’s Venom and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man could meet each other in a movie in the near future, which would be both interesting and rather puzzling.

“That’s where it’s all going to lead,” Ruben replied when asked about it.

So does this mean that Tom Hardy’s Venom is now part of the MCU? I really don’t know, but what’s for sure is that this Venom and Spider-Man crossover film will be handled by Sony Pictures and not Marvel Studios.

Venom 2 is expected to hit UK cinemas sometime in October 2020.

Meanwhile, Zombieland: Double Tap is coming out in UK cinemas on October 18th, 2019
