Todd Philipps’ Joker Origins Movie Could Take Inspiration From The Killing Joke And The King Of Comedy

Todd Philipps’ upcoming Joker origins movie is reported to take inspiration from Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke and Martin Scorsese’s The King Of Comedy.

There’s been a lot of chatter recently about the upcoming Joker origins movie which is said to be apart from the DCEU and could star Joaquin Phoenix as the lead, although he apparently hasn’t been approached by Warner Bros. yet for the roleTodd Philipps will direct, and Martin Scorsese will produce. It all sounds a tad strange since we already have Jared Leto playing the Joker, yet it looks like Warner Bros. and DC Comics want to create a subbranch of comic book movies which are maybe a bit more grounded in reality.

We’re now hearing reports that this Joker origins movie will draw inspiration from Alan Moore’s incredible graphic novel, The Killing Joke, as well as Martin Scorsese’s very own film, The King Of Comedy. According to The Wrap, this new Joker movie will “portray Batman’s arch-nemesis as a failed 1980s comedian who becomes the clown prince of crime after bombing with audiences.” This synopsis sounds very close to that of The Killing Joke, which also outlines how a series of horrible events lead the unnamed man to eventually turn into one of history’s most infamous villains, The Joker.

The Wrap also claims that Joachin Phoenix is close to signing a deal to star as the lead in the movie, despite the actor having recently claimed otherwise, although he could have simply been wrapped up in legal red tape meaning that he couldn’t publically discuss the project.

Production on the film was initially set to start this year, but that might be pushed back due to a series or script rewrites.
