The Mandalorian’s Werner Herzog Reveals Why He’s Never Watched A Star Wars Movie

Werner Herzog is one of the strangest people working in Hollywood, and somehow he’s ended up acting in the new Star Wars TV show on Disney Plus, The Mandalorian.

After having watched the first episode, I can reveal that the German actor/director is perfect in his role as ‘The Client’, yet he has made it very clear in the past that he has never watched a single Star Wars movie.

He’s a very peculiar man, with an incredible turn of phrase, brilliant voice and accent. He’s also perfectly cast in The Mandalorian, and he recently did an interview with Variety in which he explained why Jon Favreau cast him and his experience on set.

“I think there are two reasons,” Herzog began when he was asked why Favreau cast him in The Mandalorian.

“One, he has seen some of my performances as an actor and is completely convinced that I should be part of his new series.

“Second, I think it’s a bit of an homage to my films and to my storytelling and to my way of putting emphasis on world stories, fever dreams in the jungle, quasi-science fiction stories. I think he sees a kindred spirit in me.

Werner Herzog doesn’t think his lack of Star Wars knowledge was a problem on the set of The Mandalorian

He then admitted that he didn’t feel pressure working with Favreau because he didn’t know which other films he had ever made.

He then went on to reveal that he had never seen any Star Wars movies (and still hasn’t), but he explained that it didn’t matter one bit.

No, it doesn’t really matter. You see, it was a very lively exchange, man-to-man so to speak, between Jon Favreau and myself. I was not tossed into unknown territory. I was very well briefed. I knew what was expected of me — I knew the interior landscape of the character and I knew the exterior landscape. You shouldn’t feel upset that I haven’t seen the “Star Wars” films; I hardly see any films. I read. I see two, three, maybe four films per year.

The actor and filmmaker did go on to reveal that he does watch the Kardashians though, saying:

You have to know what a good amount of the population is watching. Do not underestimate the Kardashians. As vulgar as they may be, it doesn’t matter that much, but you have to find some sort of orientation. As I always say, the poet must not close his eyes, must not avert them.

I would love to be in the room when Herzog is watching the Kardashians. That would be something to behold.
