Kathleen Kennedy Explains Why They Revealed Palpatine’s Return In Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker’s Trailer

It came as a bit of a shock to many Star Wars fans when it was revealed in the very first Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker trailer that Darth Sidious, a.k.a. Emperor Palpatine, would be returning in the movie.

This seems the kind of thing you’d think they’d want to keep secret until the film is released, but no, they opted to reveal his return in the very first trailer.

It did feel very odd at the time, and I was wondering whether it might have been a bit of a mistake, however, it seems as though Lucasfilm and Disney knew what they were doing, as Lucasfilm’s president explained in a recent interview with Gizmodo.

I think that is a fair assessment. Because we’re bringing this to a conclusion, many of the characters that are playing a significant role in the story, the fans know. They don’t know how this story is going to unfold, but they know who they are.

It’s not like Baby Yoda. We’re not revealing something significant like that. And I think that that is important to this story.

We’re not trying to be coy and unnecessarily clever. And we had a lot of conversation about that.

That’s an interesting way to tackle Palpatine’s inclusion in the movie, and it also saves them a lot of time and effort trying to hide the fact that he’s in the movie.

It’s certainly not like Baby Yoda, and Kathleen is right, we don’t know how the Sith Lord is going to factor in the film’s story at all.

It’s still a complete mystery to us, as is basically Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker’s whole plot.
