Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson Will Be Heading Up A New Star Wars Trilogy

Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s director, Rian Johnson, will be creating a brand-new Star Wars trilogy which will explore other areas of the galaxy far, far away.

This is very big news. Lucasfilm’s big boss, Kathleen Kennedy, has announced via the Star Wars website, that Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s director, Rian Johnson, will be heading up a brand spanking new Star Wars trilogy. When it was announced that Colin Trevorrow would not be directing Star Wars: Episode IX, many people were hoping that they would get to see Johnson direct the final chapter in this new Star Wars saga. However, the job of concluding this story went to The Force Awakens’ J.J. Abrams. Certain Star Wars enthusiasts thought that it was a bit of a boring choice and the announcement spurred some individuals to start a petition to get Abrams off the project.

That said, it all makes perfect sense now. Johnson was never intended to direct Episode IX because he was being saved for even bigger, and hopefully better things. “We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and Ram Bergman (Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s producer and regular collaborator with Johnson) said in a joint statement. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”

Yes, the news that Johnson will be directing a new Star Wars trilogy is exciting, however the most notable part of Lucasfilm’s announcement the fact that, “Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.” This is what so many of us have been asking for. The Star Wars galaxy is huge and it’s about time that we get to explore more of it on the big screen. Johnson feels like the right man for this job and the fact that Lucasfilm made this announcement now before we’ve even seen Episode 8, is proof that they are very happy with his work, which in turn suggests that he’s made something very special in The Last Jedi.

I cannot wait to watch Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which hits UK cinemas on December 14th. Have you bought your tickets yet?
