Solo: A Star Wars Story: Ron Howard Reshot 70% Of The Movie

It’s been revealed that Ron Howard reshot 70% of Solo: A Star Wars Story after coming onboard to replace the previous directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who wanted it to be more like Guardians of the Galaxy.

A lot has been said about the behind the scenes drama on Solo: A Star Wars Story. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the directors of 21 and 22 Jump Street, were hired to helm the film yet ended up leaving the project due to ‘creative differences’. It was reported that the film’s writer, Lawrence Kasdan, wasn’t happy with the amount of improv going on on set, and felt that it was getting in the way of his script. People who have read the script – which Kasdan wrote with his son Johnathan – suggested that it’s one of the best Star Wars scripts ever written, so it’s no wonder that he wanted the film to stick to what was on the page.

Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm ended up bringing in Ron Howard as a safe pair of hands who would do what he was told to do and wouldn’t stray too far away from the source material. According to some reports, the film that Lord and Miller were making was closer to Guardians of the Galaxy than Star Wars, which personally I would like to have seen, but you can’t get everything.

Ron Howard is now credited as the film’s sole director, and it’s been suggested in a new report from The Wall Street Journal that he reshot 70% of the movie. So basically, Howard reshot the bulk of the film and kept some snippets of what Lord and Miller had shot previously. Hopefully, they’ll be some of their humour for us to see, but don’t go into the movie expecting to see a whole lot of it. It sounds like the film was reworked from top to bottom.

According to one of The Wall Street Journal’s sources, “Ron wanted to go back to the spirit of the original trilogy, while Phil and Chris were looking forward to something new, more like Guardians Of The Galaxy.”
