Rian Johnson Says His Star Wars Trilogy’s Still Going Ahead

There’s been a certain degree of uncertainty when it comes to Rian Johnson upcoming Star Wars trilogy. We reported a few weeks back that it might not be happening, but he’s made some new comments about it which has us thinking that it’s still going ahead.

Rian Johnson certainly has his critics – I’m not one of them. People weren’t too happy with Star Wars: The Last Jedi and the decisions he took for some of the character, namely Luke Skywalker.

However, you can’t argue that The Last Jedi isn’t a well-made film. It’s easily the best looking Star Wars film ever, and there are thematic elements to the movie that haven’t been explored before in the franchise, especially when it comes to the movies.

So, this brings us to Rian Johnson’s comments when asked recently about the current state of his Star Wars trilogy.

A few weeks ago, Johnson said in an interview: “Well, we’ll see. I’m still talking to Lucasfilm, they’re figuring out what they’re doing and we’ll see what happens. But I’d be thrilled if it happens, and I’m working on my own stuff too.”

It looks like Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy is still happening

This comment had some Star Wars fans hoping that it might mean he won’t get to do his Star Wars trilogy. As for myself, I was quite disheartened to hear him say this.

However, he recently spoke to Entertainment Tonight and he was there to promote his upcoming Whodunnit flick, Knives Out (which is brilliant by the way – review coming shortly) and clarified his comments, explaining that he had misspoken.

“Did I say ‘if’? Oh god,” he replied. He then added: “I have no update at all. But I’m still working with Lucasfilm on it, and they’re figuring out when they do what and everything.”

So, this seems to indicate that he’s still involved in the project, but Disney is just working out what to do with the future of Star Wars.

There’s also the David Benioff and B.D. Weiss Star Wars trilogy, and to be honest, that would be the trilogy I’d be more worried about because they haven’t really covered themselves in glory recently.

There are also some reports that Disney wants to start developing a Knights of the Old Republic Star Wars movie.

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker will be hitting cinemas on December 19th, 2019.
