Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Trilogy Reportedly Axed By Lucasfilm And That’s A Bad Thing

There’s been an awful lot of talk recently questioning whether Rian Johnson was going to get to do his Star Wars trilogy or not.

It became especially noticeable after it was revealed that David Benioff and Dan Weiss left (or were fired from) their Star Wars trilogy.

I suddenly saw lots of articles theorising over whether Lucasfilm was also going to cancel Rian Johnson’s upcoming trilogy.

Well, it seems as though someone’s told the people at the YouTube channel Lords of the Long Box that Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy is dead.

OK, so, how reputable is this ‘outlet’. I’m going to be honest, I don’t know. I’ve never heard of them before, and they don’t have an abundance of subscribers.

That said, the more subscribers you have doesn’t make you more reputable. It just makes you a little bit higher profile, and you’re probably better at coming up with clickbaity headlines (that’s a nut I’m still trying to crack…).

Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy should be made

They claimed that Rian Johnson’s trilogy is no longer being considered by Lucasfilm. They went on to add they Johnson had proposed a new Star Wars trilogy, but that it was never really in serious contention after the backlash against Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Now, this is where I’m going to get a bit ranty. I think it would be a huge mistake if Lucasfilm was to pass on Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy.

Let me explain why. Johnson is simply put, one of the best directors working in Hollywood today.

He’s not afraid to tackle big ideas in his movies, and yes, there may be some missteps along the way, but I’m never going to criticise a director and writer for thinking big and bringing in new and fresh ideas into a franchise such as Star Wars.

Frankly, Hollywood needs more people like Johnson and fewer people like Abrams and Michael Bay, to name just a few high profile directors.

I would put Johnson in a similar category of director as Christopher Nolan. He’s not quite there yet, but he’s shown tremendous vision and ability with his films up to this point.

I truly believe that people will change their tune on Johnson the minute Knives Out is released because I believe that film shows how talented a filmmaker he is.

I would even say that Star Wars: The Last Jedi shows that. The man was brave enough to try something new with the Star Wars franchise, and he got lambasted for it.

Yes, there were issues with it, but then again, there are problems with all Star Wars films. I’m a huge Star Wars fan and I can see that there are problems with each and every film – even The Empire Strikes Back has a few bum notes in it.

Anyway, I think it would be a cowardly move if Lucasfilm was to part ways with Johnson and one which would really demonstrate that Lucasfilm isn’t willing to leave the past behind and build towards a better, more interesting future in the Star Wars universe.

Lucasfilm needs to think towards the future, not the past

Let them keep making movies in which a Skywalker beats the Dark Side. Let them make movies which please the incredible vocal group of so-called ‘Star Wars fans’ who weren’t happy that The Last Jedi didn’t match their fan theories.

I love Star Wars, and I always will do, but I’m going to be honest, if Lucasfilm really does part ways with Johnson and don’t start thinking outside the box, they’re going down a very slippery slope, and there might not be any way back for them.
