Rian Johnson Confirms That His Star Wars Trilogy Won’t Be Knights Of The Old Republic

Writer and director Rian Johnson rules out the chance of his upcoming Star Wars trilogy being an adaptation of the video game Knights Of The Old Republic.

When it was announced that Rian Johnson would be heading up a new Star Wars trilogy which will move away from the Skywalker saga, it wasn’t long before people were citing the 1993 video game Knights Of The Old Republic as a potential source of inspiration. And who can blame them? It’s one of the most popular Star Wars games and has a rather interesting plot that focuses on how the Jedi and the Sith came to be. Who wouldn’t want to see a Star Wars trilogy based on that story?

That said, it seems as though writer and director Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy will not be using the video game as a jumping off point. During an interview with Uproxx, he was asked whether his new Star Wars trilogy will have anything in common with the game, to which his answer was no.

“I played that game when it first came out and it was like, god, I loved it. Yeah, that’s a fantastic game. And I understand it, the instinct to automatically go to something that you know and love, that you’ve already seen,” he said.

“What’s really fun is the notion of what new stuff are we gonna see, what new stories can we tell? The possibility in a new story told over three movies, go anywhere, do anything, sky’s the limit, in Star Wars? That’s so exciting,” he said.

On a personal note, I think that Johnson is right to eschew the Knights Of The Old Republic video game and all other Star Wars source material in favour of creating something genuinely different and new to the Star Wars cinematic universe.

Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be in UK cinemas on December 14th. Have you booked your tickets yet?
