The New Trailer For Naughty Dog’s The Last Of Us 2 Will Make You Squirm

A new trailer for The Last of Us 2 was premiered yesterday at Paris Games Week 2017 and it’ll make you squirm in discomfort. Check it out below, if you have the stomach for it.

Violence in video games has become commonplace over the last few years. It seems as if every big studio, apart from Nintendo, is making a game with some sort of violence in it. There are instances where the violence is warranted, and Naughty Dog’s The Last Of Us was arguably one of the few games that merited its depiction of extreme violence due to its dark subject matter, yet also the many themes the game explored. It was a mature game and for a reason. Naughty Dog’s next project is The Last of Us 2, a.k.a. The Last of Us Part II, and they premiered a new trailer yesterday at Paris Games Week 2017. Check it out below. WARNING: It’s very, very violent.

There’s an obvious issue with this trailer for The Last of Us 2: it’s far too violent. It is, in many ways, violence for violence’s sake, and there’s no context to it. We aren’t introduced to the characters. That said, it does help to set the tone of the game and ends with a memorable shot of The Last of Us’ terrifying clickers. However, I’m not entirely sure whether Paris Games Week was the best place to showcase this trailer, which is an event watched by millions of minors. The Telegraph chatted with Jim Ryan, President of Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe, President of Global Sales and Marketing for Sony Interactive Entertainment, who said that this game is for 18+ which therefore means that the violence is warranted. You can read his comments below:

“The Last of Us obviously is a game made by adults to be played by adults. I should never prejudge this but it will probably be rated ’18’, I think it’s fair to say. And there’s that market for those people who like that sort of game. Adults who like that sort of game. And I think we cater for that, and at the other end of the spectrum there was Concrete Genie, which my 8-year-old decided was the game she would like to play very much.”

However, Ryan misses the point. You can’t show a gory and violence-filled trailer for The Last of Us 2 and say “It’s OK because we also have stuff for the kids.” The kids are also watching the violent stuff you show during your conference! They won’t just watch the trailer for games like Concrete Genie and say, “That’s enough for me.”

Violence aside, The Last of Us 2 does look like a graphical marvel and if it’s anywhere as near as good as the first game, it’ll be something worth checking out. However, Naughty Dog has been a bit naughty with this trailer, and maybe Sony should think twice before showcases such brutal trailer at their events which are streamed live to the general public. Maybe take a leaf out of Nintendo’s book.
