Nebula Actress Karen Gillan Being Eyed To Play A Female Version Of The Mask In New Spinoff

Karen Gillan is really starting to be one of the biggest names in and around Hollywood, and to think, she started off being The Doctor’s ‘companion’ in Doctor Who.

She plays Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame), and she’s also the Jumanji films alongside Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Kevin Hart.

Anyway, it looks like she might get to star in her own big comic book movie franchise as it’s been revealed that she’s in contention to play a female version of The Mask in an upcoming reboot.

The Mask came out in 1994 and starred Jim Carrey as the titular character, who also went by the name of Stanley Ipkiss (best name in Hollywood history).

We Got This Covered is now reporting that Warner Bros. Pictures has Karen Gillan in mind to take over from Jim Carrey.

That said, it was also reported that Warner Bros. wants Carrey to return to the franchise as Ipkiss, which means that there could be a passing of the torch (or the mask itself) from Stanley to Gillan’s character.

Now, I’m not sure how fans of The Mask movie are going to react to this news of the Nebula actress being cast as the new Mask.

The Mask’s fanbase isn’t quite as loud as the Ghostbusters‘, James Bond or even the Ocean’s Eleven fanatics.

Would Karen Gillan make a good Mask?

However, there have been a lot of attempts to try and bring women into franchises that were led by men in the past, and they haven’t all done too well at the box office.

I really understand why movie studios are looking to do this, yet just bringing a woman into the lead roles isn’t the way to go about this.

What they should focus on first and foremost is making a good movie, regardless of whether it’s lead by a female character or not.

Just take a moment and think of the very best action/horror movie which was led by a female character.

OK, I’ll tell you what it is. Alien. Ridley Scott’s Alien is a masterpiece, and that was a movie which was led by a woman in a genre that tended to be dominated by male leads.

Do we need a female reboot of The Mask?

Why did it work so well? Well, the first reason is it’s an incredible film. The second reason is they didn’t focus on gender politics because Ripley was initially written to be a man.

It should make no difference whether the lead is a man or a woman, but unfortunately, it does and often these movies like the recent Ghostbusters and Ocean’s Eight tend to focus too much on the fact that their lead characters are women.

Let’s just hope they have a good script and focus on making the first genuinely good Mask movie since The Mask and wash the bad taste that Son of Mask left in our mouths. That film was terrible.

Karen is one of the best actresses and is very beautiful. Why do they insist on giving her roles that cover her face? If that is sexist I apologize. but geeze….

Have your say...
