Lucifer Season 5: Why Did Fox Cancel The Show?

It was pretty big news when Fox opted to cancel Lucifer after just three seasons, and people got pretty pissed, but they now have season 5 to look forward to.

Anyway, fans of the show were upset that they weren’t going to get an actual ending to the show.

People were so enraged by Fox’s decision that they took to social media and got the hashtag #SaveLucifer trending on Twitter.

This was the moment when Netflix swooped in and saved the show, and they have since made one season of Lucifer, Season 4, and are currently working on Season 5.

However, it was then revealed that Season 5 would be Lucifer’s last, which also got fans rather annoyed, but the showrunners took the time to thank Netflix for allowing them to finish their show the way they wanted to.

When it was revealed that season 5 would be Lucifer’s last, showrunners, Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich, said: “We are so incredibly thankful to Netflix for resurrecting our show last season, and now letting us finish the story of Lucifer on our terms,” said Joe and Ildy.

“Most importantly, we want to thank the fans for their incredible passion and support. The best is yet to come.”

Modrovich also shared a letter to the show’s fans on Twitter in which she addressed the news season five would be its last.

She wrote: “Hello beloved Lucifam! We know there’s been a lot of confusion over the recent announcement that is our last season.

“Many are wondering if they should fight for more? While we feel just as sad as many of you do that this marvellous ride is coming to an end, a fight won’t change things right now.

“We spoke to our partners at Netflix and Warner Bros, and you should all know TREMENDOUS care and consideration was put into making this decision.

“In fact, the whole reason they decided to announce that it was our fifth and final season simultaneously is because they know how devoted and passionate our fans (and we!) are and wanted to give y’all (and us!) as much time as they could to accept and process the news. And for that, we’re incredibly grateful.

“But mostly, we’re all beyond grateful that they gave us this new life in the first place. AND a chance to give this story the ending it deserves. And, of course… none of that would have EVER happened if it weren’t for YOU. We can truly never thank you enough for that.

“This has been and will continue to be an incredibly beautiful and unique experience. So, on behalf of the cast and Joe and I… we look forward to spending this final season basking in the Lucie-love with you!!”

Lucifer has done pretty well since moving to Netflix, however, the streaming giants don’t share their numbers, so it’s impossible to know exactly how well.

That said, it’s safe to assume that it did well enough to earn it a fifth season, which doesn’t happen too often with Netflix ‘original’ shows.

However, we do have the numbers for the show when it was on Fox, and if you start looking into them more closely, it becomes apparent why they opted to cancel it.

It’s viewership dropped rather dramatically in its last year on Fox, which is the main reason why they didn’t want to renew it for a fourth season.

Lucifer went from averaging 7.17 million viewers in the first season, to only 4.16 in the third. That’s a pretty spectacular drop in the ratings.

Then you have the fact that the last episode of season 3 only got 2.42 million viewers.

It has to be said that Fox made the call to cancel the show very late. They actually opted to cancel it after the final episode aired, which might be a factor in why it was picked up by Netflix.

Season 3’s finale ended of a huge cliffhanger – Chloe Decker finding out who, or what, Lucifer really is, which is something fans have wanted to see since the beginning of the show.

So, that happened, and then fans were desperate to know what was going to happen next. Fox then cancelled the show. Fans took to social media to complain. Netflix saw an opportunity to get extra subscribers and saved the show.

It makes perfect sense, because with a solid viewership of just over 3 million.

Amazon was also interesting in Lucifer

It was reported that both Netflix and Amazon were interested in picking up the show because they could see huge value in the show’s niche and passionate fanbase.

So, the real reason why Netflix picked up the show, in the end, was the fans.

There’s no word yet on when Lucifer Season 5 will release the show, which is reported to be released in two parts.
