Lucasfilm is Working on a Standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi Movie

Disney and Lucasfilm are reportedly in early development on a new Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone movie, yet there’s no news yet on who might star as the Jedi Knight.

Fans have been wanting this one for a very long time, including Ewan McGregor himself who mentioned in a interview with Collider that he’d love to do an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie. It looks like he might be in luck since there are new reports suggesting that Disney and Lucasfilm are working on exactly that, although there’s no word as to whether Ewan McGregor would return as the iconic Jedi Knight.

According to The Hollywood Reporter Disney and Lucasfilm are in early development on the standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi project and that Oscar-nominated director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours and The Reader) is in talks to helm the film. However, there was no word on who the film might star as the lead and the film has no script as of yet.

If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.

Obi-Wan Kenobi was originally portrayed by Alec Guinness in A New Hope, and the appeared as a Force ghost in the subsequent two movies. Ewan McGregor then played a younger version of the character in George Lucas’ prequel trilogy. McGregor’s voice could also be heard in J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens during Rey’s vision scene. Guinness’ Obi-Wan could also be heard briefly during the same scene.

The Jedi Knight was most recently scene in animated form near the end of the last season of Star Wars Rebels, much to the joy of the show’s fans. It’s safe to say that he is a very popular character and that many people would relish the opportunity to see him in action once again and learn more about this iconic figure in both cinema and pop culture.

If you define yourself by your power to take life, your desire to dominate, to possess, then you have nothing.

Rogue One was the start of these Star Wars standalone movies, the next of which will be the Han Solo spinoff film, which is now being directed by Ron Howard after Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were relieved of their directing duties. Lucasfilm and Disney are also reportedly considering making other spinoff movies to the main saga centred on Yoda and Boba Fett, yet those films haven’t been confirmed as of yet.

In terms of upcoming Star Wars movies, we’ve got The Last Jedi to look forward to later this year. It’ll be in UK cinemas on December 15th, 2017.
