Luc Besson And EuropCorp Are Looking To Secure A Multi-Movie Deal With Netflix

Yes, this might end up being a thing. Luc Besson and his movie studio, EuropaCorp, are looking to sign a multi-movie deal with Netflix.

There was a time when Luc Besson was one of the most promising and interesting directors working in Hollywood. However, in recent years he’s become somewhat of an enigma and his movies have been proving to be very divisive, none more so than his most recent picture, Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets. Personally, I found it to be rather boring and terribly miscast, especially Dane DeHaan.

Anyway, Luc Besson isn’t really working in Hollywood anymore since he started his own film studio, EuropaCorp. They’ve been responsible for many of the Europe-based thrillers such as the Taken and Transporter films. When they’re good, they can be really quite enjoyable, but more often than not they’re very disappointing. But, it now looks like EuropaCorp might be teaming up with Netflix, which in my mind is the perfect place for their movies.

According to Variety, Luc Besson and his production company, EuropaCorp, are looking to sign a multi-movie deal with Netflix. Each film will have a total budget of $30 million, which sort of puts a nail in the coffin of Besson’s hopes to make a sequel to Valerian because he’d require a much bigger budget than that, but sometimes restraint is the best thing for directors of his ilk. Just look at what Besson was making at the beginning of his career with smaller budgets compared to the stuff he’s been making recently with millions of dollars.

I’m quite optimistic about this deal. Netflix has already shown its willingness to make interesting stuff and they’re now making a big move into the movie industry with films like Okja and Bright. Even though I found Bright to be total and utter tosh, I’m still glad they made it and Netflix was the perfect place for such a movie.

What do you think about this deal? Are you looking forward to seeing some new European-based action thrillers on Netflix? Let us know in the comments below.
