Joker Won’t Win Best Picture At The Oscars This Year And Here’s Why

Now, I fully expect Todd Phillips Joker to be nominated for basically everything at this year’s Oscars, however, I’m also certain it won’t win the Best Picture award, and I’m going to explain why.

The very first, and most important reason is, it doesn’t deserve to win the Best Picture Oscar.

Don’t get me wrong, I adore the movie. I love it for many reasons, yet I do not think it’s anyway near being the best movie of the year and it’s not the type of movie that members of the Academy tend to vote for.

Joker is a comic book movie, let’s face it, even though it’s the most ‘artsy’ comic book movie ever made. It’s about a guy who put face paint on a kills people.

It’s a comic book movie which was heavily inspired by Martin Scorsese movies, which is why it’ll be one of the very first comic book movies ever to be nominated for an Oscar.

Todd Phillips should be applauded for that. Moreover, I do think it’ll win something on the night. I reckon Joaquin Phoenix will become the second actor to win an Oscar for playing the Joker.

It could also win the hair and makeup award on the night. However, it will not win Best Picture. I can assure you that. I would even put good money on it not winning Best Picture.

Talking of putting money on things, let’s have a look at the odds.

According to SkyBet, the favourite to win Best Picture at the 2020 Academy Awards is – drumroll please – Sam Mendes’ 1917.

His movie is at 7/4 on to come away with the Best Picture award on the night, and that’s really not surprising.

First off, the movie is a war film, and the Academy just loves those, unless we’re talking about Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk.

I genuinely still can’t believe how poorly that film did at the 2018 Oscars. It was nominated for eight Oscars and came away with three of them, but it didn’t with Best Picture, Best Director, Best Score and Best Cinematography which was a shame.

Anyway, if you were to best on Joker getting the Best Picture Oscar, SkyBet would give you odds of 7/1, which makes it their fourth favourite behind 1917, Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood (9/4) and Parasite (3/1).

I’m actually rather surprised that Parasite is so high up their list because ‘foreign’ movies rarely win the Best Picture Oscar.

Finishing off the potential Best Picture winners were have Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman (15/2), Marriage Story (12/1), Jojo Rabbit (20/1) Le Mans 66, or Ford v Ferrari in the US (33/1) and Little Women (40/1).

I reckon those will be the nominees too. It’ll be 1917, Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood, Parasite, Joker, The Irishman, Marriage Story, Jojo Rabbit, Le Mans 66 and Little Women.

They can nominate up to ten movies, so they might end up adding a surprising one in there. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood perhaps, or Ad Astra even.

Maybe Avengers: Endgame might even get a Best Picture nomination, which would be fun.

It looks like 1917 is going to win Best Picture

As far as the winner is concerned, I really do believe it’s 1917’s to lose. Sam Mendes’ film is coming out at exactly the right time. It’s a war movie and it’s been getting rave reviews.

I haven’t had the opportunity to see it yet, but I really want to.

As far as who’d I’d give the Best Picture Oscar to, my vote would be with Knives Out, and I would definitely give Rian Johnson the award for Best Original Screenplay because his movie was perfectly written.
