Is Luke Hinting That Rey Will Be A Grey Jedi in Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Trailer?

Could Luke’s words at the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s trailer be hinting at the beginning of the grey Jedi, with Rey being the key to finally bringing true balance to the Force?

“Breath… Just breath… Now, reach out. What do you see?” That is the question that so many people have been asking themselves over the new Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer. Ever since it dropped last Friday, people have been going through the teaser, frame by frame, trying to piece together the film’s plot by looking at a two minute long promotional video. What we have learnt from Disney and Lucasfilm in the past, is that they’re very good at making trailers that tantalise, yet give very little of the plot away.

Think back to Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One’s first trailers. They gave away very little. Although, there were clues, hidden messages within these short promotional clips, that hinted to bigger truths. I was wondering whether there might be one big hint in The Last Jedi’s trailer.

Luke’s statement at the end of the trailer teases the end of the Jedi. He literally says, “It’s time for the Jedi to end.” That’s a pretty bold statement to make, and a lot of people have taken this to mean that this movie will see the end of the Force-sensitive and lightsaber wielding organisation. The film’s title, The Last Jedi (which I predicted ages ago by the way… just saying), seems to point towards this being the case.

However, what I like to think, is that Luke’s actually referring to a new Jedi Order, or a new type of Jedi, specifically, the grey Jedi. We’ve heard of these Jedi before in Star Wars lore, yet they’ve never been directly referred to in the films, at least, not to my knowledge. The grey Jedi were a very special type of Force-user, who were capable of using both the Light and Dark sides of the Force. There are theories suggesting that Samuel L. Jackson’s Mace Windu was a grey Jedi, since he was able to tap into both sides of the Force, however, that’s never really been considered as cannon.

One of the reasons why Luke went into exile on Ach-To in the first place was to find answers, and during his time away from civilisation, cooped up at the fist Jedi temple, I wouldn’t be surprised if he came to the realisation that in order to attain true balance in the Force, the Jedi and the Sith must end, bringing forth a new type of Jedi, one that can wield both the Light and the Dark sides of the Force. Could Rey be that person?

We already witnessed in The Force Awakens that Rey is in-tune with both the dark and the light. Her visions are proof of this, yet she also demonstrated some Sith-like abilities, most notably, her ability to read minds and her lightsaber fighting style, which has been likened to that of Emperor Palpatine’s.

Whatever ends up being the case, we already know that Rian Johnson’s sequel is going to be dark, many people have speculated that it’ll be the Empire Strikes Back of this new Star Wars trilogy. Bringing an end to one of the oldest organisations in the galaxy would certainly be a brave and bold choice, but would be made even more captivating if we get to see the birth of a new Order, the grey Jedi, led by Luke and his padawan, Rey, who could very well end up being the key that truly unlocks the full potential of the Force.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be in UK cinemas on the 15th of December.
