Hugh Jackman And Ryan Reynolds Among The Top Choices For The Detective Pikachu Movie

Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds are just two of the names that Lionsgate is rumoured to be looking at for the lead in the Detective Pikachu movie.

Yes, the Detective Pikachu movie is happening and Lionsgate is currently looking to cast the picture. This film will be based on a video game called Detective Pikachu: Birth of a New Team which was released in Japan last year in which Pikachu is a detective you have to help solve perplexing crimes.

Unfortunately for us Pikachu fans in the west the game wasn’t released in the west, but we haven’t given up hope. After Pokémon Go’s huge success last year, Lionsgate decided to buy the rights to the Detective Pikachu movie in the hopes of catching the Pokémon hype train before it left the station (although, Pokémon’s been hugely popular for years now).

According to That Hashtag Show, Lionsgate is looking to cast the movie and they already have a list of potential male leads. Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson are all among the studio’s top choices to play the titular character.

This does look a bit like Lionsgate’s wish list and I’m not totally sure whether any of the above would be willing to star in the Detective Pikachu movie. However, it does depend on whether the script is good or not. It would be interesting to see them cast both Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds who share some sort of fake beef. It would be fun for the movie to incorporate to Deadpool-esque meta gags.

Rob Letterman (GoosebumpsShark Tale, Monsters vs Aliens) is set to direct the picture which is being written by Marvel scribe Nicole Perlman (she’s also working on Captain Marvel’s script) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls). I just hope they cast Danny Devito as the voice of Detective Pikachu.

Detective Pikachu is set to start filming in London this coming January. Who do you think should be in the Detective Pikachu movie? Let us know in the comments below.
