Huawei Freebuds 3 Review

8
A-OK

I’ve been on the lookout for the perfect pair of wireless headphones for what seems like ages, and then these Huawei Freebuds 3 came along.

Let me start off by saying that Huawei’s Freebuds 3 are still not those perfect wireless headphones, but they’ve come very close.

Over the years, I’ve found it very difficult to get a pair of headphones that are completely wireless and can stay in my ear canals without causing me major discomfort after more than 30 minutes.

Each pair I trie end up giving me horrible inner ear pain and then the ones that don’t sound terrible.

It’s one of those proper first world problems.

But I kept on looking. I kept on trying strange and different types of headphones.

I feel like I’ve gone all over the world in search of the best wireless headphones.

The United States (Beats), German (Sennheiser), Japan (Sony), Sweden (Urbanears)…

Could Huawei’s Freebuds 3 be the answer to my wireless headphones issues

The list of headphones I’ve tried is endless. Most of them break over time, others don’t sound good, and some of them are very painful.

Having an Android phone, I didn’t feel like forking over the £199 for Apple’s AirPods, so I stayed away from that.

That was when someone I trust asked me whether I had tried Huawei’s new Freebuds 3?

“Have you given those new Freebuds a go yet?” my friend asked.

“No. Who are they made by?” I replied.

He then told me they were Huawei’s new wireless headphones, and then I thought, “Hmm, interesting. I already own a Huawei phone. Why not try out their new headphones too?”

So, I did. First off, I went for the new Valentine Day edition Huawei has recently released.

They come in a glorious shade of red, and given the charging case’s spherical shape, when I take them out, people often think I’m about to eat a Babybell.

But no, I’m about to open up my brand new Huawei Freebuds, and  I get a little thrill of excitement every time I open the case to reveal the AirPod-esque headphones inside and the graphic pops up on my phone with a picture of my Freebuds 3 informing me how much battery they have left.

I can’t really explain why, but the novelty never wears off. This is as close to the ‘Apple’ experience you can get on an Android device, and I love it.

I know a lot of people claim that Huawei enjoys “ripping off Apple”, but I say, they take what the US company does and put their own unique spin on it.

These wireless headphones don’t just look the part, but they sound it too.

Honestly, they sound brilliant. Deep bass, excellent highs and the perfect mid-range. It’s tough to find wireless headphones that sound so good.

I also love the fact that these headphones come with a form of active noise cancellation.

Now, you’re not going to get the same sort of noise cancellation you’ll get with over-the-ear headphones, but it’s a pretty neat trick.

All you need to do to activate it is tap of the left earbud twice, et voilà. There is one problem with this noise cancellation feature. It doesn’t work if you’re on a bike or running.

What it does is tries to filter out outside noise and what ends up happening is you hear a lot of wind if you’re on a bike or running fast.

These aren’t ‘sporty’ headphones, so you probably shouldn’t be cycling or running with them anyway.

That’s not what they’re built for. They’re made to be quiet, discreet and to sound good.

These Freebud 3’s are made to be worn on your way to work, while at your desk, walking around in the city or maybe on a plane.

The other thing I like about them is the battery life is pretty darn good.

The earbuds last 4 hours and then you can get a total of 20 hours with the charging case.

These are the wireless headphones you’ve been looking for

That’s pretty good for the price point. They don’t last quite as long as the AirPods, but they’re also a bit cheaper, and I found them to be more comfortable.

As is the case with these sorts of earbuds, you do end up having to remove a lot of ear gunk from them, but that’s the same thing with most in-ear headphones nowadays.

I say, just always keep a cotton bud handy (yucky, I know, but also necessary).

I’ve tried to keep this Freebuds 3 review as free from ‘tech-speak’ as I can because that’s not what I want to read, and assume you don’t want to either.

What I will say is that their ‘bone sensor clear calling’ feature is incredible.

I’ve had the clearest calls using these headphones, and that’s something that I’ve found really difficult to have with all the other wireless headphones I’ve used.

I love being able to call people using these headphones and having my hands free to do other stuff.

It’s pretty much game-changing and really impressive

So, as you’ve come to find out by now, I really like these Freebuds 3 from Huawei.

Most people might cast them off as being a rip off of Apple’s AirPods, and they’ve certainly been inspired by them.

Yet, they come packed with nifty little features, look great and sound brilliant.

Apart from some little gripes I have with them, I think they’re brilliant for everyday use.

Just don’t take them to the gym with you because they’re not designed for that.

What do you think? Will you be purchasing some of Huawei’s Freebuds 3?
