Could Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Be Marvel’s Best Film Yet?

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s full length teaser trailer hitting the web, I thought it was about time to talk about James Gunn’s follow up to his 2014 smash hit.

James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy tore up the rule book as far as superhero movies were concerned. It certainly took Marvel’s films into uncharted territory. Thanks to Guardians’ success we’re now going to see more of Marvel’s cosmic realm on the big screen, and that’s a very good thing indeed. Things will start to get even stranger now that Doctor Strange is also officially part of the MCU.

Things look like they are starting to change at Marvel. Gone are your bog-standard superhero movies with one dimensional characters. Instead we’re getting to see complex protagonists, such as Star-Lord, Raccoon, and Doctor Strange himself, and multiple dimensions, instead of the single dimension we have been accustomed to seeing over the past few years.

After seeing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s teaser trailer, which has only just hit the web, it looks like James Gunn’s sequel may be better than the first, but you should never judge a book by its cover. In other words, get excited about Vol. 2, but try to contain your excitement (which is obviously why I’m writing this blog post about the movie…).

James Gunn certainly seems to like his upcoming movie. When he shared the video on his Facebook page, his caption read, “It’s [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2] my favorite movie ever, and I hope it will soon be yours.” He’s very enthusiastic about his film, and so he should be. He’s been slaving over it for a while now, and by all accounts he’s delivered a truly remarkable film. And even if it doesn’t quite meet our incredibly high standards, we should still be excited for the movie because of what it represents.

James Gunn has changed the status quo when it comes to superhero movies. Firstly, there are no actual ‘super’ heroes in this new franchise (barring Baby Groot of course, but run with me on this one). Guardians of the Galaxy was about a bunch of average men and women (or rather woman) coming together to stop evil from destroying everything. It’s about teamwork rather than the brilliance of one man, which is why I loved the movie so much. It didn’t matter that the villain wasn’t the most devious or interesting. All that mattered was seeing the Guardians become a proper team.

Secondly, James Gunn perfectly managed to blend popular music into his movie, and judging by Vol. 2’s trailer, it sounds like he’s achieved the same thing. As we learnt from watching Suicide Squad, it’s not enough to just stick a pop track anywhere in a movie. The music needs to become part of the story, which is exactly what Gunn did with the addition of Star-Lord’s Awesome Mixtape Volume 1. I just can’t wait to hear what’s in Volume 2. I particularly liked listening to Sweet’s Fox on the Run in the teaser trailer. According to Gunn, we’re also going to hear Jay and the Americans’ Come A Little Bit Closer and Fleetwood Mac’s The Chain in Vol. 2.

Finally, Gunn has proved that Marvel can work with directors who want to do their own thing (within reason, as Edgar Wright sadly found out). Guardians of the Galaxy was very much James Gunn’s movie, and it seems to be same with Vol. 2. He wrote and directed both movies. He’s very much the captain of his own ship. We’re now seeing Marvel hire directors such as Scott Derrickson, Anthony and Joe Russo and more recently Taika Waititi who are all looking to do the same sort of thing.
