Gotham Season 5 Will Almost Be A Reboot After A “Cataclysmic Event” In Season 4’s Finale

Gotham’s Executive Producer has revealed that Season 5 will be a “reboot” of sorts after a “cataclysmic event” will take place in Season’s finale.

Gotham Season 4 has proven to be somewhat divisive, yet for some reason, I just cannot take my eyes off it. As a Batman fan, I should get annoyed with how the show’s writers treat my beloved characters, yet I have come to realise that I need to separate the Batman comics and Fox’s Gotham TV show. They’re not one in the same. The completely different beasts and both have their strengths and weaknesses.

Gotham Season 4 recently revealed that Jerome Valeska wasn’t The Joker, despite all signs pointing to that being the case. The title of The Joker actually went to his twin brother Jeremiah in an unexpected ‘twist’ (calling it a ‘twist’ is a bit much. It wasn’t a twist at all, it was a cop-out). However, despite the show’s obvious flaws, there’s still much to love about it. One thing that I admire about it is the way it manages to reinvent itself every season, and it seems as though they’re going to do it yet again with Season 5.

During an interview with ComicBook.com, Gotham’s Executive Producer, Danny Cannon, revealed that something big would happen in Season 4’s finale that will almost “reboot” the show in Season 5. “The cataclysmic event that happens in the last three episodes not only will change Gotham,” Cannon told the outlet. “It not only combines so many characters that you don’t think will co-operate with each other, but it changes the face of Gotham forever, so that season five, it’s almost a reboot and a different show.”

However, Cannon was quick to reassure fans that they aren’t going to reboot the characters, it’s going to be more a “reboot of stories”“Our characters have reached a maturity now, our characters are so well defined and that’s why I think as writers, that’s right about the point when you want to change people’s perception of them,” Cannon explained.

He continued: “The [term] ‘reboot’ means, just when you thought you knew people, something else will happen, and just when you thought your season five would be like season four, season five is completely different. New characters and old characters that have changed. It’s a complete [departure], and the city has changed too, new characters on a new landscape.”

And while Fox hasn’t officially renewed the show, Cannon is confident that Season 5 will happen. “We’re building to something much bigger. It’s the biggest cliffhanger we’ve done. I mean, there has to be season five. Everything points to that because it’s set up in that way.”

What do you think this will mean for our beloved Gotham characters? What do the showrunners have in store for us? Only time will tell.
